Thailand question: How do I get back the import duties on an expensive medical device?
Dear readers,
I bought an expensive medical device in the United States that was delivered via FedEx. I had to pay a small € 1.000 import duties to FedEx before it could be delivered. The device did not meet the requirements and I returned it.
Both the seller and FedEx do not want to help recover this tax. Can I possibly get this back at the tax office in Pattaya and if so, does anyone know where it is located?
Does anyone have experience with this and can help me out?
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Michiel

The attached link takes you to a translation of the Thai customs legislation. Look under part 3 in section 28 and you will see that under the conditions set a large part of the paid fees can be reclaimed. You will still need Fedex's cooperation, I think, in providing the requested supporting documents.

I think you should also ask for specialist help such as an import/export broker because your situation is unique in the sense that the device, as Johnny BG says, has already been cleared! Do a search in your area in that sense. Costs money again, yes, but you won't escape that anyway.
It's an annoying thing and I see few possibilities as a private person.
The goods are cleared in TH and then put into economic circulation. It would be otherwise if goods that have not yet been cleared are tested and returned.
It is extremely annoying, but it is nice for importers in TH who have to comply with all kinds of rules and certainly a medical device that is very expensive to obtain the correct import permits. These costs are included in a sales price and if you don't have that for it, sometimes cheap is also expensive.
Not.
I didn't succeed either.
They kept sending me from pillar to post with more questions.
With a look of "don't get it yet".... Farang. Do they have it
If coffee uses money.
Any further effort is wasted time. Sorry

An unproven accusation of corruption.
That device is cleared.
If you just returned it, without checking with customs first, you probably don't have any proof that you returned the device.
Just that you sent a box with something in it somewhere.
That seems difficult to correct.
I have confirmation from the seller that it has come back and a refund of several thousand dollars the next day. Plus the bill from FedEx for sending the "box with something in it"
I have all possible proofs.
