Thailand question: Grab app and pay?

Dear readers,

We are both around 80 years old and didn't see a chance to register for the Grab app again last year. Is it true that you can now only register and pay with a credit card? That will be very expensive due to ad and currency change (Australia). Are there other options, such as a chip card with an amount of Thai money on it?

The tuk tuk and red taxi are fun, but a bit difficult and somewhat uncomfortable.

Maybe someone knows the solution.

thanks in advance

Regards,

In

Just install the Bolt app and you can pay cash in baht.

I use Wise for this, request a debit Card via the Wise app or Wise website, one-off 7 euros and you can easily pay in Thai currency in shops, restaurants, etc. Pinning at an ATM is also no problem if necessary.
You deposit some money into your account from your local currency, convert it to Thai Bath and of course the other way around is no problem either. The costs for this are considerably lower than at the bank.

Exactly the way we've been doing it for a few years now. In NL we always deposit Baht in small amounts (50-100 Euro at a time when it is a bit higher than standard, 36.8 is the average of the past year, and 36.4 average of the past 5 years, now 37.75) The deposit in terms of fee costs is low until this week 63 euro cents at 100 Euro, now it is 68 cents.
Not that it makes much difference in the number of baht you get on your account. But in TH you pay with it at the supermarkets, etc. And the rate is a lot higher than the exchange offices. (In addition, you do not walk the entire holiday with a wad of cash in your pocket)
Of course, the occasional debit card remains necessary for things that can only be paid for in cash, but then the costs are only 220 Baht per PIN transaction. (So it is best to immediately withdraw the maximum of 30.000 Baht from Krughsri, among others)
That (poisonous green) debit card also works great for credit card payments.

By the way, I am surprised that you can no longer pay Grab in cash….. In January/February that was still possible. Although the app indeed indicates; Credit Card at Grab. In any case, Bolt is certainly Cash, even cheaper than Bolt, but also slightly less reliable…. If the driver has the idea that due to traffic, etc., he has lost more costs on petrol than it yields, he simply cancels the ride, while you have been waiting for fifteen minutes.
At Grab we always prefer the “Grab-Taxi” version, slightly more expensive than regular Grab, but usually more comfortable and reliable.

Can someone confirm that? So if you now order a taxi with GRAB you can no longer pay cash with the driver? I don't see that clearly anywhere in the Thailand Grab app.

Pieter, yesterday I used a Grab taxi and just paid cash as always, asked the driver if he knew about the change to only pay with credit card, he knew nothing.

I was able to pay with cash in Korat until 1,5 weeks ago.

    Dear Nell

We have been using the Grab app since January of this year and pay with cash. Just grab a local pre-paid phone number, download Grab and you're ready to go. I cannot recommend Bolt, we live in Chiang Mai and it takes a long time before a car is available. This in contrast to Grab.

Paid cash yesterday and will continue to do so. If a debit card had been uploaded for a period, an amount will be debited in advance with a cashless booking, which is always higher than the actual amount for various reasons, according to Grab, eg different route. The overpayment should be refunded…..You understand, this does not happen. Paid 2 thb too much over 80 rides, so back to cash even though they push you to pay cashless.

Went out with the Grab yesterday. Just cash payment.

    Dear Nell

We have also been using the Grab app since January of this year and always pay with cash, never a problem. Just grab a local pre-paid phone number, download Grab and you're ready to go.
They always come here: pick you up from the jungle, short rides, they wait for you to do your shopping, help with stowing bottles of drinking water in the car and out again of course. Very satisfied with the GRAB phenomenon.
If you are in Hua Hin, give us a call, maybe we can connect together.
