Dear readers,

During our annual hibernation we always use a telephone with a Thai number. We always had enough balance left over and were able to use the telephone immediately on a subsequent visit due to number portability.

Last year this system appeared to change and I discovered that the credit could only be used for three months after recharging. Maybe I don't have the right card (True) and does anyone know of another provider with which we can make cheap international calls with a long shelf life of the credit?

With kind regards,

Pam

All I know is that if your SIM card is not registered with a passport, everything ends.

Dear readers, I have had a prepaid SIM from True since 2009, had to register later
after every time I top up my SIM card: example, today I put 200thb on my card then the validity period expires on November 21, 2016, so valid for one year at True.
    Have a nice weekend Pascal

true card is good, with asterisk 934 hash you can charge further, costs 10 bt per month. John.

    Hall Pam,

Topping up the above is of no use to you, because you are not in Thailand.
I advise you to go to a True store and then you can top up for 3 or 5 baht / month, so the number of months or equal 12 months.
Passport with you, then maybe have it registered right away.
Check in the store before you leave, because we had not done this when registering and when we returned home we saw that everything would be gone in 3 months, including our phone numbers.

    Success.

You can also extend this validity, costs a few baht per month, I've been doing it for years

Some shops have a charging device outside and works on 10 baht pieces. Charging every 10 baht is 1 month, so with 20 times 10 baht you have 20 months.

I have had a Thai SIM card / number from AIS for many years. With each top-up, the validity is extended by one month to a maximum of 1 year. With AIS you can already top up with 20 baht in a machine at a service center. Yesterday I topped up 2 x 20 baht in Bangkok and my validity runs until 20-11-2016. For example, every time I am in Thailand I go home with a one-year validity. Of course you can also let someone else top up your number. Then your telephone number is valid even longer, even if you are not in Thailand.

My old AIS SIM (7 years old) gives me 1 year of validity after every charge, and a second AIS SIM recently purchased only has 2 months of validity...?

True also has a Simcard especially for tourists who can call abroad cheaply, where the validity period after the last top-up remains three months. The card with a validity of up to one year has a more expensive rate for calling abroad.

My calling credit, at DTAC, is valid or tenable for one year and becomes valid/tenable for another year with each top-up. I've had for years.
