Dear readers,

I visit Thailand for a while every year with my Thai wife and want to buy a scooter for myself. Now I see that these have much more cc than in the Netherlands. My Dutch driver's license states that I can drive a motorcycle up to 50 cc.

If I now buy a Thai motorcycle and also insure here, will I not be covered because I do not have a driving license for this?

Can this only be solved by getting a motorcycle license?

Greetings,

Benny

Benny, without a motorcycle license (Thai, s) you are not covered for insurance, so you are obliged to get a Thai, s motorcycle license (which is easy)

      Anthony,
Can you give more details about the simple process of obtaining a Thai motorcycle license? is there some kind of exam involved? Thanks for any clarification.
      Greetings,
      Guy

Benny, if you want to fall back on your Dutch health insurance or travel insurance in the event of an accident, you run the risk that no payment will be made, after all, you are riding a 125 cc scooter and that falls under a motorcycle license in the Netherlands. The insurer claims that you got on a motorcycle illegally.
If you do have a motorcycle license, you will have to be able to prove this with an international driver's license. What you own is a moped certificate.
    Regards,
    Tim.

If you have an AM (moped) driving license in the Netherlands or Belgium, it will not be recognized in Thailand.
If you have a B driving license in the Netherlands or Belgium, you are not allowed to drive a moped in Thailand.
If you have a driver's license A, you are allowed to do so,
The state insurance that you must take out with a moped is not much. You and your moped are not insured. Damage to others is only covered to a very limited extent.
If you have an accident, and the other ends up in a hospital for a few days, you will have to pay a lot of extra yourself.
That is why it is advisable to take out good insurance for mopeds and motorcycles.
Exchanging a Dutch or Belgian driving license for a Thai one has also recently become more difficult (not as easy as before).
I've been following the full trajectory of someone who did it for the past week. Below the report.

Can you still get around that so-called eye exam? Since I'm color deaf, I'll never get through that.

You are not insured!!!!!!!!! What I did was go to the Dutch Embassy and they put it in writing that I had a driver's license for a motorbike at 2 wheels. Furthermore, nothing was mentioned about cc etc. My other driver's license for the car was also included. Then I had to go to the nearest office to issue the Thai driving licenses for the place where I am staying (where the exams are also held) and also prove that I am staying there. For the latter, I went to the local police and received a statement from them (I then put something in the pot for voluntary contributions; we organize a staff party once a year). Within 1 minutes I had my driver's license.

    Dear Benny,

FF get a Thai motorcycle license: Step-by-step plan
1, Go to Immigration with photos, copy of passport and proof of rent or ownership where you live.

Wait FF and you will receive the statement right away.
Then go to a private clinic to collect a health certificate.
Cost 100 baht Duration 15 seconds. They don't even measure your blood pressure.

The next day you have to be at the Ministry of Transport before 9 am (Pattaya).
With the documents from Immigration, copy of passport (again) + health declaration, report to the MvT check-in desk.
Then you get to do a routing, Watch a movie, Theory exam in English on the PC and an eyes and reaction test.
If all is well, drive a circle around the church (250 meters) and you have passed.
Pick up your driver's license for 1 year in the building and you can drive off on your Harley.

    Succes
    Pieter

PS Before the theory exam, look at the approx. 20 deviating traffic signs that speak for themselves

Not only is it difficult to exchange a foreign driving license for a Thai one. The Motor and Car driving exams have also been made more difficult.
Yet it is easiest to get your motorcycle license in Thailand, cheaper and easier than in the Netherlands.

You can get an international driver's license in Thailand at the IAA with which you can also ride a motorcycle... good luck 😉

You can easily apply for a temporary driving license at a post office, I thought for 30 days, just bring your original Dutch driving license if you are going to drive heavier than 50 cc, and yes that's all mopeds there

Johan, that temporary driving license is also an international driving license and can you apply for it at a Thai post office?
