Dear readers,

Our satellite dish was damaged in the last storm. According to the PSI dealer, it could not be repaired. So we had to buy a new one and replace the old one, just the round dish without the device receiving the signals. It would cost 1000 Thb.

The next day two men arrived with a much smaller dish, one of 80 cm. The old one was 130 cm (in diameter) and with the announcement that the same as the old one would cost 1900 Thb. An hour later we were called that they had forgotten to tell us that 500 Thb for the installation (35 minutes) had to be paid, because that was outsourced.

The next day they came to install the case, but also a smaller dish. The consequence is that we do not have a good signal at BVN. All kinds of streaks through the image. We have contacted PSI, they said they would call us back. But not so. Incidentally, the old dish is not even a year old, but was destroyed by a huge hailstorm. That gave us a good picture.

We live in Isaan in a small village. How to act? Take a loss or go to the police!

Yours faithfully,

Henk

What did you say when it was clear that a dish as large as the old one would cost 1900 Baht?
'Then just do the smaller one?', or 'I want another one that's the same size, don't I?'

    • Henk says up

They came the first time with a much smaller antenna, which we refused and said we would only be satisfied with the same as before. In the end they installed a smaller one. The same size would cost 1900 Thb. Ok for us, but they still mounted the small one ( the one of 1000 Thb, plus 500 for mounting, ) and charged 2400 Thb. We were not at home during the installation. We are doing a renovation. I'm not dying of those few cents, but I feel cheated.

How exactly did you get scammed?
You decided to accept the smaller dish because the large one was more expensive?
The installation costs seem a bit high to me, but that of course also depends on where the installers have to come from.
Travel also costs time and money.

    Hello French.
I have also been scammed with an air conditioner repair. I had to pre-finance 7000 Bath and then never saw the repairman again.
The advice was forgotten and regarded as learning money.
We falans always get the short end of the stick.
Ask your. Do you have internet ? I have 25 Dutch channels for you in HD quality for 595 Bath per month via Easy Worldwide Television.
    Best regards.
    Peace.

Don't be sad about Farangs getting ripped off.
The Thai are also often scammed.
They are often even more naive than the Farang.

I heard a story about that a few months ago.
Boy meets someone (a stranger) in a cafe.
Talk a bit and get a beer.
Then he asks someone if he can borrow his moped.
      Moped never seen again.

In the Netherlands, people are also often scammed.
Continuing to look at everything with a healthy portion of mistrust saves a lot of money.

You would like to report a damage of 2400 Thb, while it is clear from your message that you have not made any, or at least bad, price agreements.
You can try to act tough and refuse to pay the 500 Thb installation costs, they don't have a leg to stand on there either.
Remains a damage of 1900 Thb.
Are you going to bother the police for this? I think they have other business to do than fix a shoddy pricing deal.

I think this is a lot of wind for a small problem.

By the way, smiling and saying in a friendly way that you feel cheated will solve a lot more than ant-fucking official authorities.

You pay the tuition fee, my experience is never give an advance, in many cases you will lose it.
if they want to sell they say ok, otherwise choose another business

lost 10 000 bhat several times

I think to receive BVN properly you need the big black dish.

If it had been agreed that a large dish would be delivered for 1000 Baht, you would still have had to demand compliance with THAT agreement when it turned out that it was going to deviate from it.
Of course you should have been able to prove that agreement if necessary.
Now you later agreed to the installation costs and you apparently agreed that the dish they came with was installed. And no one will give you the guarantee that BVN will be fault-free in advance.
Contacting PSI is of no use. PSI is not a party to this. You have an agreement with the dealer.
There is absolutely no question of fraud (under Dutch law). There is no use of a false name or capacity and no use of cunning artifice and/or a weaving of fabrications.
So it is a purely civil matter that the police have nothing to do with.
You could take legal action for non-performance. But in my opinion, the dealer simply fulfilled the agreements finally made or tacitly accepted.
You have not been scammed, you have been clumsy.

  9. David says up

You could have declined that installation. But you agreed, she's here now, right?
And the price was communicated in advance.
There is no question of fraud here, miscommunication in any case.

So at the moment you have lost 1.000 THB for the dish and 500 THB installation costs.
Which is of no use to you; you can't watch BVN.
Try to convince the seller to take back the dish that is too small and install the larger one instead. At the initial price of 1.900 THB.
You have already paid 1.500 THB. Do you still have to impose 400 THB.

By the way, the price of the large dish seems to me to be correct…

Gentleman's agreement, no one has to lose face.

    Success with it!

    • ruud says up

I assume that the installer will be happy to be paid 500 Baht a second time if he has to install a new dish? After all, he does not have to become a victim of your problem with the supplier of the dish.

The large dish is 900 Baht more expensive than the old one.
If the supplier would like to take that dish back, the amount would be 1400 Baht and not 400 Baht.

      • David says up

        Sounds right :~)
If Henk tries a gentlemen's agreement, maybe he can get rid of something …
If not, write it off in accounting as a tuition fee.

    Dear Henk
3 years ago I experimented myself with a 1,5m C-band dish (the black one with “chicken wire”), but I barely got hold of the transponder on which BVN is located. (I have the necessary measuring tools for it)
According to the advice of a local installer, you need a much larger dish to receive BVN, which I ordered at the time (2,4m I thought).
The dish was delivered, aimed at Thaicom and ... immediately perfect image & strong signal, now for 3 years
You can find more information about this on various forums, including those of BVN itself.
The 1,5m dish is now aimed at asiasat and we also have free DW, Al Jazerah etc…
(both dishes were connected to 1 receiver via a DiSEqC switch, costs 200,- Bath)
A 1,5m dish here costs 1000 Bath, the 2,4m version costs 4000 Bath.

    For your information

The problem with these kinds of issues is that there is usually nothing on paper. And that while it is so simple nowadays. That's why another tip, which you can of course also use in the Netherlands.
If you have verbally agreed on something that still needs to be delivered, just send an email when you get home:

Further to our conversation this afternoon, I hereby confirm that we have agreed as follows:
You will deliver product Y to me on date X at price Z.
Subject to your counter-message, I assume that I have correctly reflected the agreements made.
    Yours faithfully,
    Name.

Can save a lot of trouble.

I have experienced a more serious event here. Purchased a heavy duty antenna rotator from a very large Japanese company Yaesu. Cost approximately 1300 Euro. Rotator set up according to the rules of the art: with two support bearings above. After a month of service, the rotator fails. Everything was disassembled and it was determined that the electric motor was burned. Contacted the technical service in BKK with a certain Mr Art who advised me to send the rotor to BKK for repair. This was done with an accompanying technical report. No news after FOUR months! Phoned and yes, Mr Art had concluded that the electric motor was related and this after 4 months. Went to order a spare in Japan...again 4 months and again nothing. We called again and Mr Art reported that the rotator could NOT be repaired!!! So we were asked to send the rotor back to me so that I could repair it myself, in the meantime the warranty had already expired... After two months of NOTHING…. what should a person think about that???

    • Fransamsterdam says up

The warranty conditions will of course apply in this case. The defect occurred within the warranty period. The fact that the repair cannot be completed within that period is irrelevant.

      • Dirk says up

        Why should it matter
It has been clearly stated that the causative reason for the damage is a hailstorm.
No manufacturer is responsible for this!
Not in Thailand, all of Asia and even the whole world.

        • Fransamsterdam says up

Dirk, my comment about the warranty is in response to Lung Addie's claim.

    • DKTH says up

I don't see the problem, this is Thailand right? And this kind of misunderstanding doesn't just happen here, it happens everywhere. Why is there such a fuss about an antenna/rotator. Just adjust to the country where you are staying. TiT

      • Henk says up

Thank you for your extremely positive contribution. In other words, you just have to take everything in Thailand. And everywhere in the world. I'll get on with this!

        • San says up

You don't have to swallow everything (and everywhere).
Make transparent agreements, so that you do not have to rectify afterwards what went wrong under the guise of fraud.
That takes you a long way.

  13. Jacques says up

In this country there are a lot of people who are handy in building houses, installing antennas, etc.
You do depend on the person or contractor in question. It is not feasible to find out who you can trust with the construction or who not.
I myself had my bungalow built with a second home, because my wife's family often comes over and then our house with three bedrooms is too small!!!
My Thai wife arranged things with the contractor and then nothing is written down.

Anyway, the construction went in four phases as usual and we paid part of the money each time.
In total something like 450.000 baht. We were already warned by several acquaintances who have done the same that the last payment will cause problems for the contractor (that had also happened to them) and yes, so did we. His money was gone and he had all kinds of problems that prevented him from finishing the last part of the house. I had to pay another 3500 euros separately to another contractor to get it done. Not to mention the way eea is made. I still have leaks, the water drain from the toilets and shower goes into a separate container under the ground which fills up and has to be sucked out regularly, etc, etc.

This kind of practice is commonplace in Thailand and there is nothing you can do about it. Take your loss because getting annoyed doesn't help. Lawsuits start I didn't come to Thailand for that I can better meet my time. As a foreigner you are already 1-0 behind in court. We have not handled this properly ourselves and a major problem is communication. I don't speak enough Thai and was mostly in the Netherlands at the time of construction. I also learned from this but it can happen again.
