Dear readers,

When I travel by bus through Thailand, I regularly see a car on fire on the highway. So far, about four times in the past two years.

Although I am also on the road a lot in the Netherlands, I never see that. Why are there so many car fires in Thailand? Is it overheating, poor maintenance? Who can explain that to me?

Regards,

Dirk

You already give the correct answer, as a rule poor maintenance, which often occurs is a fuel pipe break, these pipes are often made of rubber, since rubber is quite sensitive to the climate here, they quickly become porous, causing them to leak.
Biggest mistake that motorists often make in such a case is, if they see that the car is burning, panic, and leave the car on the ignition, so that the gas pump continues to work, you guessed it, in no time your sacred cow a huge conflagration.

The reason for poor/no maintenance is often the financing costs that are too high to have a car anyway. Only occasionally money for petrol and if the car really doesn't work "beun the hare" have it "made". So there is hardly any regular maintenance.

    Dear Dirk,
i think you are unlucky if you don't like cars on fire, or lucky if you like a good fire, i have been traveling thailand myself for over 30 years and i really have never seeing a car on fire, on the highway, in other places, but then it was clearly vandalism or insurance creativity.

    Yours faithfully,

    Lex K.
