Dear readers,

How much does renting a boat in Damnoen Saduak at the Floating Market cost and how does it work and for how long is the boat trip?

Which tour organization is ok (price) & (experiences) and which also stops at a coconut plantation where they make sugar.

Mrs Gr,

Marcel

Making sugar from a coconut is probably not easy.

Dear Cees, I've been there and believe me it's possible. During the tour on the floating market there are even 2 or 3 of these installations where they thicken the water from the coconut until they have sugar. Of course it is also for sale. Looks like brown sugar.
Before you arrive you can also get into a boat on the left side of the road. Lasts about 2 hours, including a stop at the “sugar factory”. As far as I can remember we had to pay 500 baht per person. Then you received a free bottle of water and some fruit upon your return.

Sugar cannot be made from coconuts, but from their juice. Palm sugar is made from it. Known in Dutch shops as Gula Jawa: sugar from Java. It is sold as a compressed mass in the form of a half-pound slice, cube or otherwise. Or more or less, or different in shape.
Used in various Asian cuisines. You then break off a required piece, which you add to your cooking or baking. Palm sugar is healthier than white sugar and less sweet.
Thai cuisine uses much less palm sugar than, for example, Chinese or Indonesian cuisines. That is because Thai cuisine is very spicy / hot in character. Palm sugar has the property of making spicy ingredients taste milder, and the Thai don't like that.
You often see that palm sugar is used in desserts. However: street food preparers and food center chefs are using more and more white sugar: unfortunately a matter of convenience. One quickly sprinkles some white sugar with a spoon on the dish. Remains: palm sugar is tastier and healthier than white sugar, for sale at BigC, TescoLotus, etc. Cooking yourself with palm sugar is even tastier.
