Dear readers,

Does anyone know if the rheumatic medicine Tocilizumab (Roche-Actemra) is available in Thailand? This is a "biological" that can be used by infusion or self-prick administration. It would be best if it can be administered in Thailand during your stay there and it does not have to be taken on the plane (of course you have to find out how much it costs and whether the insurance company agrees so that the bill can be submitted in the Netherlands ).

I know that Humira is available in Thailand, but Tocilizumab is slightly different.

Regards,

Pieter

it should be available in thailand.
    See attached click

on the very last page it says: imported into thailand by thailand Roche ltd. Hot actem
If you google further on actema thaikand you will find much more information.
there is even an article that indicates that there is a “loco” i.e. counterfeit but the same substance in thailand under the name actrema. So, go find it. Google is your friend. !

      Hello Augusta,

My wife has been using this for over 5 years. It works very well in a large percentage of rheumatoid arthritis patients, often in combination with Methotrexate or Plaquenil, but can also be used later in principle as “mono” therapy. Result : no pain, no inflammation, no limitations and in the long term only minimal damage to joints due to the rheumatism. Can be used by infusion (to hospital every 4 weeks) or subcutaneous self-injection (2x or 4x per month). The price of Tocilizumab unfortunately can be very high so if there is a "biosimilar" as john koh chang says it would help with the price.
There are also other options like Humira that are doing very well, but I would rather not have my wife switch to anything else.

I use Enbrel 50mg myclic injections and buy it here in Bangkok. My insurance covered it so far. I would go back every 3 months for family, my house and my rheumatologist checkups. I would then fly the enbrel back to Bangkok for 3 months where my husband has got a job since December 2019. Due to the Covid I could and still cannot go back every three months. The insurance reimbursed the injections I buy here. Now that the Netherlands has indicated that Thailand is "safe", it is no longer reimbursed and we have to cough up the 1200 euros per month ourselves because you can buy it here. So find out well!!! We are working on getting me accepted into a Thai insurance policy, which turns out to be difficult.

      Hello Bintu,

thanks for your comment ! How do you normally transport that Embrel from Ned to Bangkok? Taking a direct flight and with cooling equipment in hand luggage?. Do you have to have extra cooling material put in the refrigerator by the aircraft crew?
Do you also bring a document from the hospital (or do you have to go to the Thai embassy for documentation?).
      That info is very welcome.

      Thanks in advance,

      Pieter
