Dear readers,

Can I open an account with a Thai bank with an international driver's license with a Thai address? Or do I still need a visa?

Jan

At the Bangkok Bank you can also open an account without a visa, see http://www.bangkokbank.com/BangkokBank/PersonalBanking/SpecialServices/ForeignCustomers/Pages/Openinganaccountnew.aspx

You can open a bank account at Kasikorn without any problem.
Just bring someone your girlfriend or wife or ask someone
want to go with you, then it's a piece of cake.
Some banks are difficult BV Krungthai (Yellow Bank)
Kasikorn is quite flexible, Bangkok bank also flexible.

      Respond anyway.

Krungthai is ktb blue sofa .

Kasikorn yellow sofa and they are difficult.

Received an invoice at KTB on a visa exemption, a Thai friend was a piece of cake.

Is a 0% interest account so no interest. Otherwise, the requirements were as described below. Rental contract long stay visa etc.

Annual fixed costs 250thb bank card and booklet together.

I arranged it in ChiangRai in 2014, I have heard that they are sometimes a bit more difficult per location.

I do not live in Thailand is only for 1a2 holidays per year. Cash euros in the flying machine , exchange for thb and deposit . Rest of the holiday with cheap pins.

you can open a bank account in no time, someone has to act as guarantor, a Thai friend has to have her personal details recorded, so passport or something and you also have to show your passport, they make a copy of it, so not with an ANWB driving license that works not.

real documents, and it is more difficult in bangkok, only in holiday places

Unfortunately, a lot of nonsense is being spread
. To open you need: passport with valid visa, rental contract or proof of ownership of condo.
All other things are incorrect. Certainly not a driver's license.

    • Cornelis says up

Speaking of nonsense: Bangkok Bank - as far as I know - is the only bank that has also opened an account to tourists without a visa. For the relevant scheme on the bank's website, see the link above in my first response.

Br, you are absolutely right. But this wouldn't be Thailand if there were no exceptions to the rule. I recently went to the Kasikornbank in Hua Hin with a Belgian friend. He could easily open an account there, without any visa. Just his passport, and they asked him where he was staying, and that was it. He comes here on holiday a few times a year.

You just need a bit of luck. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. And then you just try again another day. Everything here is subject to interpretation…

    Bro is right!!!
Last time we also tried everything to open a bank account.
But you really must have a rental contract and you must get a certain form at immigration.
I don't know what, but they can tell you that at the bank.

A few years ago I had to get a so-called Evidence of Residence from Immigration. Pay 2 passport photos and a few hundred Thb. Had to provide the address of the hotel where I was staying at the time. Pick up document the next day. With this to Siam bank and opened an account, received a bank card and bank book. Everything was arranged quickly.

About 3 years ago I was able to open an account at the Bangkok Bank on Sukhumvit. The big couch halfway between BTS Nana and BTS Asok. (On the left as you walk from Asok to Nana.)
Only with my passport and the address of my hotel. (I brought a receipt from the hotel.)
And without a Thai girlfriend because unfortunately I don't have one. 😉

It was said that I could not use internet banking.
Too bad, that's what I really wanted. Maybe next time request it, as a 'loyal customer'.

For me, the most important advantage is that I can now bring cash with me from the Netherlands and exchange it at an exchange office with a good exchange rate (usually Superrich on BTS Asok, or as last time at one of the exchange offices on Suvarnabhumi at the entrance to the Airportlink ), then deposit directly at the Bangkok Bank and then withdraw with my Bangkok Bank card.
Free at Bangkok ATMs in the region. I believe you have to pay a few Baht at other ATMs.

But in any case, a cheaper rate and no surcharge from the Dutch and Thai banks that I would have if I were to pay with my Dutch bank card. Easily saves ten euros per recording.

Another advantage is that I always leave some Baht on that account. Then I can immediately withdraw money at the airport.

But like I said, that was a few years ago.

To answer the question….no you can NOT open an account in Thailand with an international driver's license.
And as Br wrote, that's how it can be done.
This used to be possible without a stay in Thailand, but not anymore, unless of course….this is Thailand.

Banks themselves also use different guidelines.
I have an account with the Bangkok bank, which I think is the most flexible. When I opened this a few years ago, I couldn't go to Kasikorn, checked three branches in the presence of my Thai girlfriend.
Nowadays I have an annual visa so the last time I thought it would be useful to open another account, now with the Kasikorn. The first branch refused, had to be able to show a work permit, at the second branch it was no problem. Passport with visa and ntabian job from my girlfriend was enough.
I approached Kasikorn's head office about this, according to them a work permit was not mandatory, but each branch may set additional requirements.

One bank insists on seeing a visa. Kasikorn was easy. Well 2 years ago. I was then able to open an account without a visa, etc.
Recently I wanted to open a 2nd account.. Had to show a work permit. This while I have a non immigrant o visa.
I could jump high and fall low.. But it didn't happen.
Called customer service. They made it clear to the bank employee that it shouldn't be a problem and I just opened an account.
The Bangkok bank, on the other hand, was not difficult with the right papers and visa.
This week I wanted to open an account at the thanachart bank as it is close by.
Visa, address details everything as it should be.
So she always wanted to permit the work.
Explained that if you have a retire visa you do not have a work visa.
The head office also stated that this is their policy.
You depend on the rules they set. Even if you have an account, make sure you keep it. It's hard to open a new one. Rules are created locally. Shopping does make sense, but if the head office passes on the rules, then it stops.

I have had an account with Bangkok Bank since 2011, had a lot of paperwork that was on their site, but did not need any of it, only my passport for a copy and an address in Thailand, I gave the address of my girlfriend at the time, now my wife, I do not live in Thailand get interest on this account and have opened 50.000 bath credit on this account in bangkok

Last year I walked into Bangkok Bank in Soi Buakhao on my own, with my Passport and proof of where I was staying, which was an Apartment in the Third Road (Sai Saam) and within half an hour I was outside with my coveted Bangkok Bank pass . And that proof of where I was staying was only to send my PIN code. What Mr. Cornelis said is absolutely correct!!!!

  13. He says up

Special. Both my account at the Bangkokbank and at the Kasikorn, I could immediately choose my own PIN code and received everything right away. Never sent anything. So you can see that there is no ambiguity.
