Dear readers,
I have been coming to Thailand for years and have an account with Bangkok Bank. Now this week I went there to inquire about the possibility of internet banking. But I now have a different phone number than when I opened the bank account. So it's no longer possible.
According to them I have to get papers at the embassy to open a new bank account in Thailand.
Has anyone had problems with that?

At Bangkok bank they make a fuss about everything so it doesn't surprise me but because I also had a different phone number I sat there for half an hour to sign all kinds of papers.
When I wanted to get money at the counter again because it was a larger amount, this was not possible because the number in my new passport was different from the number in my old passport, with the result that I first riddled my old one with holes had to bring a passport from the Netherlands to have it changed, again filling and signing papers for half an hour.
Incidentally, with the visa card that you may soon have to replace, it is no longer possible to pay in the store because they have gone into business with someone else and the new card no longer has a visa. There's been a lot about that on the blog.
I still have the account but have also opened another one at the green bank where the debit card with visa is still issued and where I also received a credit card, although not at the office where I opened the account, but that is how it works in Thailand , if you don't get it in one place try it in the other and yes it works.
Internet banking is not included, but with the app on my phone I can pay for the electricity and not the water. Strange but true.
Indeed, Visa is no longer on the card of the Bangkok Bank, but you have to ask for the new card that has Mastercard. They just have them. A new debit card was created for me without any problems.
Bangkok Bank is laughably bad indeed. Got a new bank book last week because the old one was full. Well, you can't do anything with a bank book and it only shows the date, the amount of the credit or debit and the balance on each line, so you can't do anything else with it. A total of 6 !!! forms I had to sign and the lady put just as many stamps and scribbles on all forms. Well I can go ahead with printed amounts in a booklet. Would there really be no one in the Bangkok head office who would come to the conclusion that 1 signature is sufficient, saves a lot of forms and personnel.
Shouldn't cause any problems. I also have another number and it was just changed to my pre-existing data.
Get papers at the embassy to open a bank account? Never heard of it and there are already some serious fake stories going around.
Just change branch or bank company I would think.
that is not a fake story, I have had an account with the bangkok bank for 15 years now, now wanted to open a new joint bank account, again with the bkk bank at central festival, but that was only possible with a letter from the embassy, so we went to the bkk bank corner walking street and everything done within 30 minutes

You have an active bank account and now only want an extension with internet banking.
Nonsense to open a new drawing for that. Just have your number changed.
Seems bizarre to me. What does the Dutch embassy have to do with this? Show a visa, I can imagine something about that, but embassy? It is (I think) crazy that you cannot apply for internet banking with an existing bank account number, even if it is with a new phone number.
And that you have to request a new bank rack number…. strange case, lacking sensible logic. But maybe I'm overlooking something?
I recently changed my phone number at Kasikorn (I've had internet banking for 10 years by the way) and after 15 minutes of filling in papers and making a copy, that phase was finished. Papers were sent to BKK and 3 days later my number was valid for internet banking.

never heard that someone has to go to the embassy to open an account. Changing phone numbers will be quite common. Could be a really simple action. I suspect that the bank clerk in question is just talking out of his neck.
I think you should first officially change your phone number belonging to the account and then arrange internet banking afterwards.

I've had the same problem as you.
I went to the Bangkok bank and there the employee again filled out papers for me and sent them to the head office. It takes a few weeks, but I received new login codes and was able to do internet banking again.

What kind of papers should that be?
Did they say that?
Or is it another bank clerk who is afraid of doing something wrong?
I just moved to Kanchanaburi. I have a non-immigrant visa, valid until April 4.
Now I wanted to open an account with the Bangkok bank, but was refused. The same goes for Krungthai and Krungsri.
Reason: my visa expires in April.
Fortunately I still have a Bangkok bank account from my previous place of residence, but I find it useful to also have an account in Kanchanaburi so that I can close the old one in due course.
One had to pull out a folder with regard to the rules at the aforementioned banks.
I walked out of the bank angry and disappointed a few times.
I have never had a problem as mentioned before and I have everything neatly arranged, in terms of documents and the financial picture.

You will only want to open an account to meet the new visa requirements.
Opened an account with Kasikornbank in Kanchanaburi a few months ago. The branch in the Big C. Never had a problem. Went smoothly.
Bangkok Bank always invents new antics. My Thai girlfriend also has a new telephone number and therefore internet banking had to be requested again. Would take seven days. Well never mind, we went to Kasikorn where opening a new account including internet banking was arranged in fifteen minutes. Indeed, I think that the employees are very afraid of making mistakes and therefore want to present everything they do not know to a superior.
I once opened an account at the KrungThai bank on the Klang in Pattaya (opposite Basaya beach hotel).
I had found an app from the bank and wanted to be able to see my balance online. But I couldn't get the app to work.
So I take my tablet to the bank. According to the employee, it was not a problem. But a moment later I saw her looking hard. And try everything, call a colleague or IT department. After some time she asked “do you have a new passport?” So I "Yes".
And after that it was in a poop and a fart for each other. And the bank has a copy of my new passport.
By the way, I haven't heard from my Dutch bank yet (about my expired previous passport details).
