Reader Question: Learning Thai on Koh Phangan

Dear readers,

We will be staying on Koh Phangan for a month next year Jan/Feb and I would like to go to an international school or someone who teaches the Thai language. Is there a possibility on Koh Phangan? I do have some knowledge of grammar, write the alphabet but speaking is minimal, so it would be useful to go to school/class during the holidays.

Thanks in advance for responses.

Regards,

Marry

I admire your enthusiasm for learning to speak the Thai language. But going to a school or an institute during a month's vacation doesn't seem like such a good idea to me personally. Learning to speak the Thai language requires more than going to school a few times. With the exception of the loanwords, the Thai words have their own character and no connection with any Western language. To master about 1000 words for daily conversation as a minimum, considerably more time is needed than you would expect in your holiday spending.
I suggest that you enjoy your holiday to the maximum and that you can add something to your vocabulary along the way. Then in the Netherlands via the internet, especially YouTube expand your vocabulary. Much of the teaching material is English-Thai, keep that in mind.
If you happen to be in a larger city in Thailand during your holiday, try to find bookstore Asia, which usually have good basic material for beginners in the Thai language in stock.
Happy holidays and good luck with your enrichment in Thai language and literature.

Language lessons or cooking lessons or otherwise lessons can be a nice way to spend your holiday in my experience.
Cooking class in Thailand, language class in Italy and Morocco.
And as Marry says, she already has some knowledge of Thai, so she knows what she's getting into.

    Mary,

Doing! The Thai language is really no more difficult than most European languages, easier in a number of ways. And it makes your life in Thailand so much more fun.

Unfortunately I don't know any specific options on Koh Phangan, but I can give you some advice. If you don't find anything, go to a school, ask for an English teacher and ask if he/she would like to teach you Thai. For example, three times two hours a week. Just speak some simple Thai, exceptionally some English. That's how I started. And speak as much Thai as possible, ask a lot nie arai what is this? Nie rieak waa arai what is this called? Not that mai? is it that good, etc. Don't be discouraged, Rome wasn't built in a day, and don't worry about mistakes. I also often fell on my face.

    Success!

Dear Dirk, many thanks for your response and of course I will first and foremost enjoy the 6 weeks of vacation!
but…. Being busy is also nice - besides, I don't have anyone to speak Thai with in the Netherlands, so it would be nice to learn as much as possible when we are in Thailand. I have been learning Thai in the Netherlands for 2 years through a Thai teacher and I also learn a lot on YouTube.
Indeed, many of his lessons are in English-Thai, but that's not a problem because I can read Thai reasonably well, so when I look at the word written in Thai, I can do it. I have all the basic books, but when we are in Bangkok we will definitely have a look at Boekhandel Asia - many thanks for the tip.

This seems pretty much it to me, with Koh Tao being one of the worst places to learn Thai right now. Reason: most of the people you will meet there are not Thai, but foreign "guest workers", ie from Burma/Myanmar. Thais watch out to be locked up there. And those others hardly need Thai, although many speak it a bit, especially the Karyen.
The reason why there is an int school, to be able to teach the many children of the stranded business farang a little better than at the Normal Prathom.
ASIA books, green letters, with more than 30 branches, is a book chain that focuses on foreign books. Almost every of the larger ones - that is NOT the old main shop along Sukhumvit/17 anymore, has just about every Thai language book for others in stock - also from German / French etc.
