Home » Reader question » Is Pai still worth it?
Dear readers,
On May 5 I will travel to Thailand again after a delay of 2 years (Covid). I am always looking for new places to discover. The list also includes Pai and its surroundings. I've already been to Chiang Mai and also a bit more west of it.
Is Pai still that backpackers town as you read everywhere or has it become a real commercial tourist village? I am someone who likes alternatives and back to basics. I also heard that you can rent a motorbike from Chiang Mai to drive to Pai and return the bike there. Does anyone have any experience with this ride or any suggestions?
Regards,
Walter

Maybe it is to do the Mea Hong Song loop, beautiful route, you can rent a motorcycle in CM, if you want to do this route you will automatically end up in Pai, I don't think Pai has changed that much.
It is and remains a beautiful region. Like a bit everywhere in Thailand, you will find accommodation based on what you desire, plan in advance.
The Mae Hong Son Loop is one of the world's most beautiful motorcycle trips that you can make. I myself already did it twice with my own motorcycle. Take it easy, enjoy the beautiful scenery. It is advisable to have some experience as a motorcyclist, there is quite a bit of cornering involved. If you do the full loop, it is 600 km long with more than 1800 bends. Truly unforgettable.
Awesome !! I looked it up online and I will definitely do this route. I am an experienced motorcyclist, but it always remains to be careful when driving on unfamiliar roads. I hope to post some photos here after my trip. Thanks
Here the Mae Hong Son Route, done by bike. One of the tracks is Pai local. The interesting locations in and around Pai are listed with a photo (see Places of interest). Find out what interests you.

If you want to do Pai again, this might be the right time. Personally, I thought it was a real tourist trap before Corona, you saw more tourists than Thais in Pai. Some people like that, but I don't. But at the moment there are few tourists everywhere and this is the time to go. I personally think Chiang Rai is a very nice alternative to Pai with a nice mix of culture (temples) and nature if you make the effort to explore the area surrounding Chiang Rai. explore.
I'm in pai this week
Been, was pretty busy, what struck me was no one wore a face mask, not even the Thais
If you are looking for peace and don't want to see any tourists, come to omkoi. This is a mountain district in chiang mai province. A large part of the population certainly lives in the mountains. We have karen here that is also the largest group, and then mong and muser. For example, you can sleep with us in casa waranya resort. So if you want something different come and see I would say. Good luck with what you're going to do.
