How should I fish in a lake near Ayutthaya?

Dear readers,

Who can give me a (simple) practical tip on how an absolute layman should fish in a lake? What kind of fish should you not eat, do you need permits?

We are staying at a house on a large lake near Ayutthaya for 2 weeks, and I thought it would be fun to prepare my own caught fish on the BBQ in the evening. I've never fished, so any tips are more than welcome.

To be clear, I just think it would be wonderful to tinker and enjoy the sunrise as a layman.

Thank you in advance for your response.

Regards,

Hans.

You provide little information about the location. Deep water shallow, lots of vegetation, bare puddle, brown water or clear, etc...
In this hot season, fish prefer to stay higher in the water column. Deeper at the bottom there is little oxygen in the warm water. So float fishing with a float.
Most Thais fish with a casting rod and a so-called feeder system. A spring, whether or not weighted with lead, in which several short lines with hooks hang. A food ball is pressed onto the spring. Styrofoam balls are attached to the hooks and then pressed into the feeding ball. The feeding ball is launched into the water with a throwing rod. The consistency of the feeding ball is crucial. The fish doesn't like it too tight. It flies too loose from the spring when throwing in.

You can of course also fish with a fixed rod, a float, weights and a hook at the desired depth. Then hang a worm, bread, maggots, corn, etc... on the hook. Fish at the desired depth by sliding the float on the line.

Thai lakes and rivers contain large fishing boats of all kinds that often have a lot of pulling power.

It is best to inquire at a local fishing shop. These people usually know the ins and outs in their region.

Also Mr. Google can make you wiser. Example left:

In the lakes these are often relatively small fish. Unfortunately, there is too much fishing with a net in the lakes and rivers, making large fish rare in public waters. There are often Thais who fish. My experience is that these people are very happy to help you. Fishing rod, that may be a spinning rod with a casting weight of about 50 grams. Length around 2.5 m is fine. Line pull is sufficient if you are around 20 lbs. The most common way is fishing with a feeder with various jaws attached. In every fishing shop there is a wide choice of food to fill this basket. The hooks in the food that you put on the basket are often placed on the outside of the food. You can also add pieces of fresh shrimp. Be careful with the fish you catch. Some pangasius species have razor-sharp spines in their pectoral fins. That disappear into your hand without any problems.
    Succes
