Reader question: How long should I stay in Bangkok?

Dear people,

I am planning to go to Thailand at the end of this year. Like everyone else, I will first stay in Bangkok for a while and then travel on to the paradise islands.

I already want to book my hotel and as you advise I will book a hotel near a Skytrain stop.

How long do I have to stay in Bangkok? I'm thinking about three nights myself. Is that enough to see the most important things? I think a week is too long anyway because it is also very stuffy there, I understand.

Who has an advice?

Greetings,

Ralf

    Hi Ralph,

Yes it is hot here there is nothing you can do about it, in three days you can see quite nice things here, such as the Grand Palace & Wat Phra Kaew, Pottery island, the Flooting market, China town, the Chatuchak Weekend Market, and what It is also very nice and beautiful to take a dinner cruise on the Chao Phraya river in the evening.
If you really want to see everything in BKK and the surrounding area, then 1 year is not enough, there is so much to see and do here.

    Wonderful holiday,
    Farang Tingtong

3 days in Bangkok is too short. Many excursions depart from Bangkok and you should not miss them. (such as the floating market). Thailand is also not a country where you should be in a hurry. You are going to Thailand at the right time of year, so don't be too afraid of smog etc. If you are asthmatic, then you should not want to go this way. We are now going to Thailand for the 3rd time and are looking forward to it again, a beautiful country with a pleasant population. Would say: “go without restrictions”.

    Dear Ralph,

    I don't know about your travel experiences, but if I may give you some advice;
If Bangkok is also your starting point, it is better to visit the city at the end of your trip. This way you create space to take the plane with peace of mind.
This is of course valid for all your trips around the world.
    Have fun traveling!

    Dear Ralph,

How long to stay in Bangkok is actually a tricky question. I am not objective as I think Bangkok is a great city. There is so much to see and do in Bangkok that you really don't have enough time. When you walk a route in the city alone, you see so much and you literally walk from one surprise to another. You can see everything in many ways. Walking, cycling, by taxi, Tuk Tuk, Skytrain and what I really like is with the local boat. There are very busy areas and beautiful green areas. Lots of culture and great shopping ( I'm a woman!) but what the first writer already wrote, seeing everything is never possible because then you need at least a year! After 15 years I still come across new sights and things that I have already seen there I also always make new discoveries. I do want to give you some advice. The first time you arrive in Bangkok it can startle you and think is this my tropical destination? Don't be scared off. Let it wash over you. Give Bangkok a chance! Yes, it's hot, stuffy, chaotic. Yes, it smells and it is very busy. But there is so much to experience and there is always something to do because of this hustle and bustle. There is always life on the street and so many beautiful, special and original things to see. Go for it and my advice for your stay is if you have the time take that whole week and I'm sure after this week you'll think too bad I have to go I had so much to see. Because there is so much to see and do, I understand that you think yes, but I don't know what and how. Let me know where your interest lies and I will give you some tips to see many nice things with some relaxing moments at a lovely swimming pool in between, because that is also wonderful in Bangkok!

Hey Ralf, a tip for a hotel at a skytrain station: Nasa Vegas. If you reserve online it's a bargain…. and a good hotel for the price you pay.

It's at Ramkhamhaeng sky train station an 15 min from Suvarnabhumi airport, I always stay there when I arrive in Bangkok. You can travel there directly from the airport with the Airport Rail Link.

    Good luck !!

I agree with Luke. Since it is certain when your return flight is, I wouldn't risk missing the flight. Depending on your available time and what you wish to see, I would schedule Bangkok at the end of the trip. To airport with AIRPORT LINK.

Hello Ralph. Bangkok is soooo interesting that you could stay there for months, and you still don't have an overview of what's for sale=to see. To get to know a city, the magic word is: walking and getting up very early. The same goes for Bangkok and all other cities in the world. Rule of thumb = look in the I-Net which touristic attractions can be seen in Bangkok. Decide for yourself what you want to see and what you don't. Visit 1 target per day. That knows how long to stay in Bangkok. I wish you a lot of fun. rebel

The three nights you have in mind practically amount to 2 full days, because the day of arrival after a long and often tiring journey from Europe you still need at least part - depending on the time of arrival - to settle in and to 'acclimate' a bit, in several respects. Especially on a first visit that is on the short side.
I myself always start in Bangkok, sometimes with 4 but usually with 5 nights. Gives you a little more time and space, you don't have to start running right away and you can also lazily spend half a day at the hotel swimming pool – in my case – for example. That's vacation too!

    Hi Ralph.
We think 3 days is long enough. Grand Palace, bike ride (very nice) and then of course koh san road. A long tail boat trip on the river.
Have fun, maybe we'll run into you we're going en Also the 26th Dec. to Thailand.

Well this is and remains a difficult question, the 1 hates it and wants to leave as soon as possible, the other loves BKK and stays there as long as possible. When I look at myself I definitely belong to the last category and I really enjoy staying there. But now back to your question: is 3 days enough? Actually no, that is too short and you are short of BKK with that. There is a lot to see and experience both during the day and in the evening. All in all, if you are in a hurry, I would do the following: day 1 relax and explore the immediate vicinity of your hotel Day 2 temples and Grand Palace Day 3 bike ride (highly recommended, e.g. Bangkok Biking) Day 4 relax and enjoy the near MBK, Central World. If your departure is imminent, it is nice to stretch another 2 days for your journey of discovery through BKK with, for example, (in the weekend) JJ market. Whatever you decide do it relax and Mai Pen Rai don't worry you will be coming here many times!

Three days may be short but I would (as stated above) put BKK at the end of your trip. Then you also have an overview of what you can possibly take home with you. But maybe you can also divide it 2 or 3 days at the beginning of your vacation and 2 or 3 days at the end of your vacation. If you arrive in BKK at the weekend, be sure to visit the Chatuchak Weekend Market (Saturday and Sunday only)

Thanks a lot for the many comments and tips! I have decided to make it only 5 nights.
