Reader question: Do Thai people get a discount if they fly to Europe with THAI Airways?
Dear readers,
A while ago I read elsewhere on the internet that Thai people get a discount when they travel with Thai airways to Europe "Thai Nationality fare".
See: ”Another tip for Thai Airways fans: your Thai wife is entitled to an 'Asian Thai Nationality fare'. As a result, she not only has a cheaper ticket, but she can also take up to 10 kg more weight, 30 kg instead of 20 kg.”
We found this out through a travel agent authorized by Thai Airways. In her case, that was a discount of 330 euros.
I have studied the site of Thai Airways but I can't find anything about it, even on the Thai version of the site. I think it's a regular discount that the travel agent gives but it doesn't come from the airline.
Anyone have experience with this, or is this not true at all?
With kind regards,
Steven
That you get a reduction is correct, but with us it was less than 330 Euro.
We make the booking through Joker, a travel agency in Belgium and fly Brussels-Bangkok.
Not only the Thai gets a reduction.
Because I am married to a Thai, I also get a reduction.
This means that we each get a reduction on our ticket.
The reduction is 100 Euro per person or 200 Euro in total.
You must be able to prove that you are married (not a Buddha marriage) and you must fly the outward journey together, the return journey does not matter.
Great for us because my wife will stay in Thailand for a year with her ticket.
In that year I return alone to Belgium for a few weeks.
By the way, since September it is now 30 kg checked baggage for everyone at Thai Airways.

Of course, all this does not mean that, with a reduction, you have the cheapest flight ticket compared to other airlines, but I think Thai Airways is good, I live not far from both airports in Brussels and Bangkok and therefore quickly get back and forth.
So fine for me.
Thai Nationality fare or Ethnic ticket is only for traveling to Thailand, so the outward journey must be to Thailand.
I can partially agree with Ronny's explanation, but I should mention that the discount is usually +/- 25% and that it is also valid for legal cohabitants in BE. Below is the email I received in response to my question regarding this subject. I don't know where you can book this in NL.
Dear Mr. Guido
My apologies for my late reply.
Referring to your visit, I am sending you the conditions for our Asian Special fares:
The rates are valid for Thai nationals and their family (spouse and resident children) with final destination Thailand. They must leave together, but can return separately.
With this ticket you can stay on site for up to 1 year and you can change the return date free of charge. You are also entitled to 30kg of checked baggage instead of 20kg.
You cannot book these rates online, but you can book them either through our office in Brussels or through one of these specialized travel agencies:

Greetings Guido
This is pure discrimination based on race and/or origin. A report to the police is definitely in order here.
Never again with Thai airway, boycott that company.
Dear Michael,
If you have been coming to Thailand for some time, two prices, for Thai and falang, are the most normal thing in the world.
Restaurants, zoos, swimming pools, amusement parks and now also Thai airways.
So be it, I'll keep my mouth shut about buying land.
Dear Nico,
It is indeed true that all the handling of those different rates is correct. But it's not because they think this is normal that we should just accept it. I think Michael actually has a point!
Then immediately in NL/Be affordable rates for the elderly/students, among others
One more reason not to fly with Thai airways anymore.
Dear Michiel and all who agree with him…
Thai Airways is not the only airline that offers Ethnic tickets. You will still have to boycott companies if you are concerned about this.
In principle, these Ethnic tickets are available from all airlines that fly to Bangkok. From experience I can already mention Etihad Airways, which also has them on offer. However, people do not flaunt it, no online booking possible, usually you have to go to the local headquarters to obtain the Ethnic ticket. Just ask KLM or EVA.
For those traveling for a maximum of 1 month, a regular promotion is usually better than the Ethnic ticket. The advantage of the Ethnic ticket is the extra 10 kg of luggage and a return date within one year.
So don't call murder and fire too quickly 😉
Greetings
Guido
Discrimination? whut?!
In my opinion this is just service from the national airline to the people of Thailand. There's nothing wrong with that, although I don't mind it myself.
But maybe you say this because KLM doesn't have it. 😉
PS; and that is why Thailand is such a beautiful country!
Officially living together is also legally valid and I had indeed forgotten.
By the way, the invoice states the following
ETHNIC
Born in Thailand or traveling with a Thai passport Proof of cohabitation (copy of marriage certificate or proof of residence) can be requested at check-in. Be sure to bring this evidence with you'
But they didn't ask me anything at the check-in.
I bought my last ticket in October, and there was no mention of percentages, only a fixed amount of 100 Euro p/p. I'll ask that next time, but 25 percent seems a lot like a ticket to me. You never know. The email you received does not make you any wiser in that regard.
That it has become 30 kg instead of 20 kg for everyone in Economy was already stated in my previous email.
Each class has gained 10 kg.
Completely agree with Michael. It is the same with everything. Even with imported food, which the Thai cannot buy, huge import duties are lifted. Only what is made in thailand is relatively cheap. even if one has to return earlier in an emergency, to thailand a farang pays more, even if he is married and lives here
Hi Steven,
the special prices (discounts) indeed only apply to flights TO Thailand (return) and on the “list price” but if you keep an eye on the promotions you will have better prices.
And indeed, you can now take 30 kg with you and people with an ethnic ticket therefore 40 kg.
Paul has recently changed that because Jacqueline from Thai Airways confirmed to me at the end of November that the ethnic ticket remains 30 kg, despite the fact that the weight for all other economy tickets has gone from 20 to 30 kg of luggage
Thanks everyone for this detailed information,
@ Michael
