Home » Reader question » Reader question: Can I take the ferry to Koh Lipe from Pakbara?
Dear readers,
We are going to Thailand in January, including Koh Lipe. Now we would rather not do the transport from Pakbara to Koh Lipe by speedboat as our experience from last time was not too good. Way too full boats.
From Malaysia you can go with a (small) ferry and I wonder if this is also possible from Pakbara.
However, I can't find anything about this on the internet. Can someone tell me more about the possibilities?
Yours faithfully,
Emerald
Dear Esmeralda,
Speedboat is the most common transport between the mainland and Koh Lipeh. They are quite big and comfortable I think; in our case the seats were transverse and we had nothing to complain about comfort or lack of space, but that can vary of course. The sea is unpredictable as well as the tourist influx.
Fortunately, there is a ferry service with meals on board if you wish. The trip takes an hour and a half.
and costs 560-700/390-490 (adult child) depending on whether you book online or on site. There are 2 transfers per day: at 11 am and at 30 pm. Well, you can read it all for yourself here:

(2015 data)
Have fun on Lipeh!
hello serge,
can i correct something?
"Tigerline" does not sail from "Pakbara" but from "Trang" only when the sea is very rough they sail to "Pakbara"

Hey Eric
Don't argue - things change quite quickly - but I was able to book an (imaginary) return ticket Satun-Pakbara/Lipeh online with this operator.
Enough choice, incidentally, it seems to me and Esmeralda and co. will certainly get there, although it may take you a little longer than planned because of rough seas or storms.
By the way, I wonder about the plans to turn Pak Bara into a container port. This was posted here a long time ago..
Hello Serge, We are not allowed to chat on this blog.
But I can give you an answer to your question of “Pakbara Seaport” and the “Landbridge”
Despite all the resistance, I think this one will come. The local people who live off the sand plateau in front of Pakbara have lost their fishing grounds with this project.
But it is the same here in Belgium (Doel) and the Netherlands (Zeeland), it is of "national importance" that this comes about. The government and PM Prayut fully support it.
The works will start at the beginning of 2017 if nothing intervenes, an environmental study has been planned that may be able to realize some adjustments.
The land in Lang-nu will also have to make way for chemical factories and container transhipment.

Eric
Ps: yes, I have now also read on the “Tigerline” site that they sell tickets for the “Andaman express” ferry. as you say “things change”
Thanks for the explanation Eric, regarding the seaport there. Indeed, we also do it in the context of economic progress. It will change the appearance and view of the beautiful pier considerably. Anyone wishing to travel on to Lipeh or Tarutao will be treated to it.
Hi Esmeralda,
Yes, you can take the ferry to Koh Lipe. There are now 3 companies making the overhaul:
Andaman Ferry line : 2x per day.
Lipe Ferry line : 1x per day.
Maya Ferry line : Sometimes, when there are a lot of people.
The ferries themselves do not have a website in English for reservations (but in Thai)
You can order your tickets at “Baan Pun Travel”
Email: [email protected]
tel : 0066 (0)86 9554475 or 0066(0)86 9692032

You can also arrange your minibus transport from Hat Yai or Trang to Pakbara with this company.
A point of attention: Do not order earlier than max. 1 week in advance.
Ps: a lot has changed with the speedboats since Prayut came to power. The number of people on the boat is now being checked by the “Marine Police” and all names are listed.

Eric
we took the ferry from pakbara to koh lipe last january and we liked it back
and from Hat Yai by mini bus to Pakbara. If you come from the airport it is a 200 meter walk for transport to the bus station. We spent 1 night in Pakbara at Best Beach Resort, which is highly recommended after a flight and an hour and a half in the mini bus. This man also arranges the ferry tickets for you. 1 night is enough, there is nothing to do in Pakbara.
