Reader question: When will E-cigarettes be banned in Thailand?
Dear readers,
In December I leave for Thailand for almost a month. Now I read on Thailand blog that the government in Thailand plans to ban the E-cigarette. As far as I can tell, they are currently plans and the ban is not yet final.
Unfortunately, I must confess that I am an inveterate and heavily addicted smoker and cannot live without nicotine. Since last February I have switched to the E-cigarette, which suits me very well. So I planned to bring my set of batteries etc. But I don't want to deal with customs issues when I arrive in Bangkok.
Does anyone of the readers have an idea when the ban will become final?
Regards,
Rob
as far as I understand from the media, people want to equate the E-cigarette with a regular cigarette.
So where you are not allowed to smoke, that also applies to an e-cigarette. It is therefore not prohibited to smoke, only no longer where a smoking ban applies.
Hello Rob,
First up: Planning and Thailand are made from the highest quality elastic ever put on the market.
Before people have even pushed this through the various rooms or chatter circles, we are already quite a bit further in time, before a serious conversation is held about it.
Don't forget that a very high percentage of Thais smoke, so I don't think that will go that fast.
But beyond all this.
I once took a puff from such an e-cigarette and thought it was disgusting to say the least.
But I can imagine if you are a heavy smoker, you will still get satisfaction from this.
Dive into the internet right before you get here, because no one can predict the future, not even me.

Here's a response from me to the news overview of November 10, 2014 and the response from Dick van de Lugt, the e cigarettes are banned in Thailand with immediate effect, source; Bangkok Post, there are heavy penalties for possession and use, including by foreigners
Dick van der Lugt says on 11 November 2014 at 15:44
@ leppak The ban is not yet in effect. Unfortunately I cannot answer your questions, because the newspaper report is not that detailed.
“Lex k. says on November 11, 2014 at 22:43 PM
Dick,
If I understand this correctly, the law is already in force, quote from the Bangkok Post of Nov 12, 2014 (indeed tomorrow, due to the time difference):
” As a result and also due to the known adverse health impacts of tobacco smoking, the cabinet last month approved a draft announcement by the Ministry of Commerce banning the import of electronic cigarettes…
The devices are banned with immediate effect and those who break the law are subject to a maximum of 10-years imprisonment or a fine equivalent to five times the price of imported or exported goods sized…
So leave your e-cigarettes at home from now on, too bad, I think they're ideal.
with kind regards
Lex K.”
Dick van der Lugt says on 11 November 2014 at 23:13
@ Lex k. Thank you for your correction. Wise advice, also given the penalty.”
So, leave those things at home, because they are therefore prohibited, although they will be offered in abundance in Thailand, but the possession of those things is punishable and the punishment is not tender.
Best regards,
Lex K.
E cigarettes are banned with immediate effect, see my previous response, I think November 12 and Dick van der Lugt's response, import and use are prohibited and result in draconian penalties.
