Dear readers,

I have already seen several reports about the drought in Thailand and that measures have therefore been taken with regard to Songkran to waste as little water as possible, such as celebrating fewer days and stopping earlier in the day.

Does anyone know what this is like in Chiang Mai? Have these measures been taken here as well? Because I think this is an area where there is more/better water supply.

I would very much like to know whether this matters and whether it is celebrated there "more exuberantly"?

Yours faithfully,

Denise

I live not far from Chiangmai about 45 kilometers south of this city .
And believe me , the Ping river is almost dry after the dam near the town of Nong Du ( Amphur Pasang ) , where I live nearby .
You can just walk through it, and your knees don't get wet in many places, not even your ankles.
Everything is bone dry here, the leaves on the trees are withering.
The mains water pressure in our village is often a peep every day.
But don't worry, because Sanuk and partygoers are going for the real trouble.
So just like last year during SongKran just keep wasting water.
And then the smog is still there , an ideal combination of high temperatures ( 16.00 degrees Celsius from noon around 41 pm ) and little water .
The Thai idea who lives then cares .

    Dear Denise
To my knowledge, no water-saving measures have been taken in CM (yet).
We just scoop water from the canal….think!
    Splash them

Question, when exactly does Songkran start? I will arrive in Bangkok on Monday April 11th and have to travel from there to Roi-et. I understand that a lot of people go from Bangkok to northern Isan to visit family.
Please comment. My thanks in advance.

It's true, Bangkok empties with songkran, Many return to their native village to celebrate New Year in family circle. I hope someone will pick you up in Bangkok because buses and trains are usually sold out months in advance.
Marc, Yes in CM there is no water shortage as you write. The dirty water is simply shoveled with buckets from the old moat. I just stay away from the event, I don't want to be sick the next day. It is mainly the foreigners who do it crazy, they have not understood where the sprinkling of water comes from. People can make me wet when I see that clear water is used and then children and acquaintances. I stick with SANUK.
Like last year, banners will indicate not to use water from the maut.
The water level in the ping river here is about 1 meter lower than normal and is stopped by the dam in Saraphi. That will be the reason that the south is drier.
        Daniel
