Dear readers,

I am in Thailand for a 3,5 week holiday. Because my hotel is somewhat remote, I want to rent a motorbike. I don't have a motorcycle license (but I do have a car license).

I understand that you are taking a risk, but I see a lot of foreigners riding motorbikes here and I don't think all of them have a motorcycle license. The landlord didn't think it was a problem that I don't have a motorcycle license.

What kind of fine is there and what kind of problems can you get into with it?

Regards,

Adriaan

During a check you will not have the correct driver's license (but that is not the most important thing).
It only becomes a major problem if you are involved in an accident with an opposing party or in a single-vehicle accident. You are then not insured (medically, legally) and that can have very unpleasant consequences!

And which insurance will pay for damages in the event of an accident? I wouldn't start it

There are thousands of Thai people driving drunk on a motorcycle or in a car.
So why not you too? “
the motorcycle rental company doesn't think it's a problem either,” so come on, you too.
No international driver's license or drunk means you have nowhere to recover.
And no petunia in Thailand means: straight into prison. You get out when you've paid; so all damage, hospital costs, compensation and possibly the hermandad will also want something.
      Look before you leap.

Adriaan, in the event of an accident with physical damage to the other party, you will go to jail. Anyway; you are not qualified to drive because you do not have a motorcycle license.

They can also detain you if someone else's vehicle is damaged because you do not have a correct driver's license. The compulsory insurance will then not cover you. By the way, even in case of alcohol or drug use, the insurance does not cover your own damage, the damage to third parties will be recovered from you and to be on the safe side they will put you in jail.

I find your comment 'I see a lot of foreigners riding motorbikes here and I don't think all of them have a motorcycle license' extremely interesting! Did you ask them that? M curious.

Find out about crowdfunding. You might need it later if you are in jail with a big claim...

I would just cut my losses and find another hotel. It is also much cheaper if you have/cause an accident!
    Good luck with your choice.

How stupid do you have to be to deliberately drive around without a driver's license? If you have an accident you will be in jail... How would you feel if someone without a driver's license and therefore no insurance caused an accident with you in the Netherlands?

And maybe your next question is about drunk driving. Serve so many people here. Why not you too? However?

    Just obey the law.

You can also choose to use the motorbike taxi, cheap and fast.
Or just go to a driving school for three half days, also cheap and fast. And now you may say, I am only on holiday here for a short time, but anyone who knows Thailand will definitely want to come back to this fantastic country.

Just get a Thai motorcycle license. Piece of cake.

Tourists wrongly think that Thailand is a big playground for adults.

I can't drive a moped, you know what, I'm going to try that in Thailand, they're not that difficult there...

That 49.9 cc moped in NL/BE is easily 125cc here and therefore a light motorcycle.
For a little more you can get one of 1-155cc or even more.

There are hundreds of accidents every day with dozens of fatalities.
The vast majority are “moped” riders.

People are starting to get tired of GOFUND promotions for tourists who cause damage with their mopeds, so before you start these kinds of experiments, you should ask yourself whether you and your family have the financial resources to pay the bill.
To be clear, the bill is for your own care, care of your victim(s), moped repair and damage to third parties, not to mention compensation to family in the event of a fatality.

    Look before you start!

    Very simple.
    1. Nothing happens. No problem.
    2. Something happens. Your worst nightmare comes true.
You have to be retarded to even consider this.

  11. Maarten says up

If you think you want to take the risk, then I say... go for it... but the consequences in the event of an accident could well become a big nightmare. Then don't complain afterwards.

In fact, we should not even answer such questions. People who believe that they can tour here as a holidaymaker without a driver's license are not open to advice. They do what they think is right and pay little attention to others.

Do you also drive in Europe without a driver's license?
The consequences here are much greater if you suffer damage or injury, they lock you up in advance until everything has been financially arranged with the other party, because you are not insured.
If I were you I would rent a car and make sure you are properly insured.
Or take a holiday where you are less dependent on your own transport.
Many foreigners indeed rent a motorcycle, but 99 percent do have a motorcycle license and that 1 percent is really stupid.
Even if you rent a scooter you need a motorcycle license, which is 50cc or more.
    I wouldn't take the risk.
the number of traffic accidents in Thailand is one of the highest in the world.
Bangkok Hotel (prison) is really terrible

  13. Judith says up

Would you rent a car in the Netherlands (or anywhere in the world) without a driver's license? I don't think so, so why rent a motorcycle without a driver's license in Thailand?

  14. Thailandgoer says up

Then I have a second question: are you allowed to drive a 125cc scooter in Thailand with a Dutch car driver's license?
I don't think so, but the place I always rent doesn't have 50 cc scooters.
When you rent a scooter, should you ask for a 50 cc? What does Thai law say about this? Everything above 50 cc is a motorcycle just like in the Netherlands.

By the way, I have a Dutch motorcycle driver's license and arranged a race at Buriram circuit 🙂
    I'm asking for a friend.

    • KhunTak says up

I have a question for you: are you allowed to ride a motorcycle in the Netherlands with a car driver's license?
Well that also applies to Thailand.
If you want to rent a scooter or light motorcycle here in Thailand, you must have a valid international motorcycle license.
There are quite a few of those holidaymakers who rent a motorcycle without a driver's license.
Get into an accident, guilty or not guilty, you are wrong.
Worse: if the accident lands you in the hospital, the problem can become even worse.
The insurance does not pay out, because you do not have a driver's license, and perhaps you have drunk or used too much.
There have been quite a few crowdfundings lately for English holidaymakers who did not have travel insurance or a valid driver's license.
Then the citizen can pay for their idiotic behavior. Ridiculous.
So first check with your health insurance, the ANWB for an international driving license and take out good travel insurance.

    All valid comments…
Why do (risk) something in Thailand, where people drive on the left, that they would not dare to do in their home country anyway?
I read “the landlord had no problem with me not having a motorcycle license”, this sounds like “the restaurant owner had no problem with me drinking an aperitif, 4 glasses of wine and a pousse cafe”… not to mention “I I see a lot of foreigners riding motorbikes here and I don't think they all have a motorcycle license” .. this sounds like “I think many foreigners here don't use condoms so why should I…” man, man, man.

The question for the specialists is: you have a motorcycle license, you have an international driver's license and you rent a 250 cc two-wheeler for 350 or 125 THB (per day), what about the insurance in case you do something (too understand sober) encounter? As far as I know, this is not included in the rental of the motorcycle...
Can this be arranged directly with the landlord or should/can this be done separately through a Thai insurance company? Maybe and probably this has been discussed before, but I can't remember.. Thanks in advance for good advice on this.

Ask the hotel if they have an acquaintance with a car.
He will drive you where you want for a few euros.
    Aircon, comfortable, no risk!
