Thai look happy on a selfie

Thai look happy on a selfie and Russians especially grumpy. Do selfies prove the prejudice that Thais always laugh and Boris and Katja are unsociable?

For those readers who don't know what a selfie is, a selfie is a photographed self-portrait, usually taken with a digital camera, smartphone or webcam, where the photo is taken by the person depicted in it. One of the typical features is that the photo shows that the person depicted is holding the camera. Its use is especially popular among young people.

But a selfie from Berlin is not a selfie from Sao Paulo. SelfieCity investigated selfies on Instagram and discovered, for example, that Thais from Bangkok are a lot happier than residents of Moscow. That may not surprise you, Thailand is not called the 'Land of Smiles' for nothing.

No fewer than 650.000 selfies were viewed on Instagram for the study. A selection has been made of 5 cities:

  • Bangkok
  • Berlin
  • New York
  • Moscow
  • Sao Paolo

In addition to the mood in the photo, it turned out, among other things, that women from Sao Paulo adopt much more extreme poses. Interesting? Maybe if you want to know how Russians prefer to photograph themselves or the average age on a selfie in New York. Nevertheless, scientists have already devoted themselves to the research results.

The question is whether a study is necessary to confirm or refute some benefits. Because no matter how annoying clichés are, they usually contain a kernel of truth…

I would put that "Thai smile" into perspective a bit.
As you may know, Thais have 10 different types of smiles. Only Thais feel the difference. Sometimes a Thai smiles at you even if he hates you, be careful with those Thai smiles, they are very superficial, don't come from very deep.
Thais smile easily when they want to, but often it is not much more than "showing their teeth". Even when a Thai makes a huge blunder, he starts laughing like it's party time, too crazy but true.
As far as the Russians and their grumpy look are concerned, I don't have such an opinion on them, I don't deal with them anyway. As far as I know, Russians aren't known as the most sociable people either, are they?

Russian culture is essentially different from many Western cultures and or Thai. Also laughing or smiling. Read more about Russian culture than many prejudices expire.

Maybe pseudo-scientific research can be done 😉

What is certain, if you look at Europe, for example, that people in the far north look more gruff and stiff, and more cheerful towards the south. This may be related to the climate. The warmer, the more open and the more cheerful, the colder, the more closed and neutral the appearance. And if you look at that worldwide, that also applies. So the climate zone can be a parameter.

There is also the economic/political parameter. If you look at ex-Soviet countries or dictatorial regimes, people will look more sullen than cheerful. They seem to carry a proverbial yoke with them.

You can call these parameters clichés, but they do apply. By the way, most people travel to countries where the aforementioned parameters provide fun and cheerful selfies.

I am so sad……because against will and thanks we have to live together with this (cl. z kk) here !!
It has done such damage to the charm of that fine land of smiles.
I've been told it's a legacy from Taksin.
Until January 1, 2015, Thailand would pay a subsidy to every “Russian” who comes to “enjoy” his holiday here.
    I let my thoughts go….

Russians grumpy?. Could well be. Their Ruble has fallen in value by half since 2000. Since the beginning of 2013 until today even 17% and in this year 2014 alone at 7%. That really makes you grumpy, doesn't it?
