It happened at the cash register in Friendship supermarket in South Pattaya. A Thai woman pays for her purchases, behind her is an elderly foreigner waiting for his turn. The woman is fumbling in her wallet and drops a banknote (I think 1000 baht) on the floor. She does not notice, only the man behind her sees it happen, but says nothing.

The Thai woman walks away with her purchase, the man takes a step forward and puts his foot on the banknote. While the cashier taps the groceries on the cash register, the man bends down, picks up the note, which surreptitiously disappears into his pocket.

A stroke of luck, the man probably thinks, because no one saw it. Or right? Unfortunately for him, the entire scene was captured on CCTV and posted by someone on Pattaya Talk's Facebook page with the broadcaster identifying the man.

What do I think? Just sickening behavior, which may be punished as theft from me!

You'll be embarrassed about it. With those current exchange rates, there are quite a few foreigners in Thailand with problems. The beer isn't getting any cheaper and neither are the women or men of easy morals. Apparently this man was thinking of a stroke of luck, but if it becomes known to him that the incident was recorded on camera, then perhaps the sentence that I have heard several times in the past will be heard. “I intended to report this to the police as found property.” may be discussed. I don't know what the punishment is for theft in Thailand, but it will be less tender than in the Netherlands.

The punishment for theft may not be too bad, but putting your foot on the image of the king will be seen as a violation of majesty.

Legally, criminally, that is indeed punishable. But I always wonder to what extent that is still really punished nowadays, or just a “tall story for tourists”, just like the Dutch walk on clogs, drug use is legal in NL…..
Theoretically correct, but in practice “nowadays”? Possibly only grounds for a fine if the agent is short on cash?

Give it a try and you will immediately know whether it is just a “tall story for tourists”. 😉

Is the current exchange rate a good excuse to steal someone else's money?

In particular, when you talk about beer and ladies of pleasure?
Besides, he doesn't look like he's starving.

If that man is identified and caught, the consequences could be severe for him. Not because he put that note in his pocket, but because he put his foot on it. Since the king is depicted on it, this is considered an insult to the king and the royal family!

Judging by his stature, the farang himself has enough to spend and is heavily invested in himself. It seems to me more of a character issue: it does not occur to him to point out the woman in front of him. Very bad!

Let them deport that bastard quickly!!!!

Did that man see that the lady has the ticket for him?
drop? Someone before her may have dropped it too.
I hope they don't find him. He certainly wouldn't have thought about that
it's an insult to the royal family when he stepped on that note.
Of course you are not stealing and he should return the 1000 baht (with a fine).
The idea that you could be prosecuted for such a (mis)step seems terrifying to me.
Someone can also impulsively stand on top of such a note if it blows from your hands.

Peter, you are also going to justify this incident. I can still understand that he didn't think about the fact that he put his foot on the money. But you can clearly see in the video that he pushes it towards him in such a way that the lady in question cannot notice that he did this. This is pure theft. You see a banknote falling, you know who it belongs to and you appropriate it. He must have alerted the lady that she had dropped something. A very base action that you want to justify. I hope they DO find him and give him a decent fine. Shame on him.

      Peter,
Look at the body language. He does see the note fall and is eager to move forward before the lady could notice that she dropped something.

Putting that type across the border is a bit too far for me, but having him pay 5000 Baht to that lady seems like a good compensation / penance to me.

You don't do this! And certainly not in a host country.
My natural and spontaneous response would be to point out the loss to the woman.
Strange attitude from that man, even if he was struggling financially.
It is not pure theft. I think that in Belgium this is classified as “fraudulent removal”. And this is equated with theft.

What a sad horn. Pick him up and write a 10 year ban in his passport and immediately deport him.
People like this give us a bad name in Thailand. What shameless behaviour.

  8. simon says up

This is really a very serious crime.
That it was a farang is serious enough.
That it was an elderly farang makes it even more serious.
That he stole money is the pinnacle.
    And that of a woman.
But that it belonged to a Thai woman, yes, it can hardly be worse.

  9. Sandra says up

To expel. It is very clear that the woman is dropping that and he couldn't put his paw on it fast enough. If he had to, he would have pushed them away. If you find something where no one is there then I can assume you put it in your pocket, but this is equivalent) to sheer theft, you should be ashamed of yourself.

  10. realist says up

It can be clearly seen that the woman drops the money.
    Disgusting behavior from that man.

  11. Rob V says up

Yes, a dishonest loser. And sometimes these are the same hypocrites who see every other person as a thief, swindler, etc. ('someone once treated me unfairly so I'm taking my chance now, too bad for that woman, my luck').

Pathetic behavior and he should be ashamed of himself. But I think deporting or banning him is disproportionate.

  12. Fred says up

There is no evidence that this lady drops the note, just the opposite. She opens her bag to pay while the bill is already on the floor.
With the opening of the sliding doors, the means of payment almost blows away and in response you put your foot on it, of course with your foot just NEXT to the face of the esteemed king!

    Fred Sponge.

    • RonnyLatYa says up

I think you can clearly see her dropping it. Take a look at position 00.15 on the video.
At that moment she drops it…..

      • Fred says up

Sorry, I didn't see a movie, only three pictures.

The content of the mentioned link is not available.

        • RonnyLatYa says up

I think they took it off line from FB.
But that does little of course.
Look here at sec 3 and you will see the bill fall

  13. Joeri says up

Almost the same happened last week. I dropped a bill from my pocket in the street while looking for my keys. A Thai young man in front of me saw it happen and made me aware of it. This way you can see who is the fairest.
