Prayut (Photo: feelphoto / Shutterstock.com)

The reign of the government under the leadership of Prayut (also known as the junta) is coming to an end very soon. Then this government will go down in history as….…yes, as what?

Perhaps we, the expats, can help the writers of Thai history. Usually, we have quite a bit of criticism about the written content of Thai history that doesn't go down truthfully in the books.

I challenge you to participate in an evaluation of the Prayut government. You can name 1 government measure since May 2014 that you strongly agreed with (if you can name more, choose the government's best decision) and 1 measure that you strongly DID NOT agree with. If you can name several, you choose the - in your opinion - worst decision of the government.

Read the comments of others and try not to say the same thing. If you agree with someone else, you can give his/her response a thumbs up.

Let me kick off.

Best Decision:

Addressing the Buddhist sect at Wat Dhammakaya

Worst Decision:

Appointing two sons Sontaya and Ittiphol of Kamnan Pho (the Godfather of Thailand) as advisers to the government.

Best decision: realization of large-scale infrastructure projects

Worst decision: the decision to use 3 dangerous pesticides for at least 2 more years

    • Tino Kuis says up

Realization? Tell. I only hear grand plans.

      • Johnny B.G says up

I realize that realization is not the right indication, so let me say that projects have been started to improve the infrastructure in such a way that more efficient use of time can be made in the future.

In 50 years' time those (rail) roads will still be there and so people can enjoy them a lot.

The Netherlands has grown through good logistics, so I don't think it's a strange idea to finally invest in this and sometimes with Article 44

Fellow responder Charly has made nice overviews and there is also something in the news sometimes, so perhaps hearing grand plans is not enough to get a better view if you no longer have the opportunity to see the work and the nuisance with your own eyes. experienced 😉

Dear Tino, I come across really big road construction projects. New roads to Korat, 3 pieces and from Pattaya to the new airport to be developed, formerly a military airport. Also route 304. And then all those roads that have become 4 lanes.

  2. Petervz says up

    Best decision

Unfortunately I can't name any of them.

    Worst decision

    Ignoring democratic values.

  3. Hank Hauer says up

I think this government has done some things right.

1 Peace and stability in the country. No parties fighting each other
2 More attention to the region
    3 Economic zones set up
    4 Tried to tackle corruption

  4. Michael says up

The best decision: immediately after the overthrow of the corrupt government, the farmers were finally paid, who had been waiting for their money for so long.

The worst decision: to increase the tourist tax.

  5. Tino Kuis says up

Best decision to do more about slavery in the fishing industry.

Bad decision to run for prime minister.

    • Johnny B.G says up

Without the EU, the problem of slavery would never have been on the agenda and I am very curious whether the slavery of the coffee pickers near the Myanmar border in the south of Thailand has already been solved.

Not in the news so unknown suffering.

      • Tino Kuis says up

That's true, Johnny. The outside pressure was great.

  6. HermanV says up

    Best Decision:
    Tackling illegal construction projects.

    Worst Decision:
    The indecision

  7. order inBKK says up

Although it may have belonged to the BMA before, but the vigorous clearing up of various tolerated/condemned abuses in BKK transport and traffic in the beginning, such as banning minivans to the bus stations and generally promoting various much-needed infrastructure.
Shared 1st place: that chip card with balance for the poor people, especially as a working idea, as always, the implementation is Thai with many gaps.
The weakest is nothing compared to what those red rascals managed to make of it (ruining it) at the time (with the thoroughly urbane BKK man as point of view).

    Best Decision:
I have no clue. Not something that stands out as a positive thing. Decisive action in infrastructural projects has already been mentioned.

    Bad Decision:
Delete and replace the constitution. Amending the old constitution (2007) to resolve elements of the 1997 constitution and some other imperfections in order to arrive at a good democratic basis would have seemed better to me.

  9. Bernard van Otterlo says up

The best decision is to ban the use of plastic screw caps on water bottles from January 1, 2026.
The worst decision is to perpetuate and expand corruption and widen the gap between rich and poor.

How well things are going in Thailand….?…Bring the following information with you, provided by a University who also speaks some English:
“18 contracts for warning Thailand to enter the bubble era….
    1. Honda adding a long holiday period in April-August, there are 10 consecutive holidays and every weekend
    2. Toyota will gradually release the Supervisors to 1 ear because of the burden of loss labor costs. Cars produced to park in full stock cannot be sold…
    3. GM has released all of sub's employees and the brand name of Isuzu is to be assembled at the factory to reduce the cost of the parent GM in the US Hold on, if not carrying for the next 3n months GM would go bankrupt…
    4. Nissan reduces production by 50% and is reducing staff for the first 6 months coming…
    5. Mitsubishis will be affected before January next year….
    6. AAT in touble too
    7.Fujitsu took 300 people out
    8. Sielo instrument…400 people….
    9. Statschippac….no work on mondays anymore….
    10. UP TO 3500 emplyoees….
    11. Samsung moved production units to Vietnam
    12. Indo closes the waters: 3000 fishery workers lose their jobs
    13. Thai Airways revised more than 5000 employees

I give up to give the list further to “18”….But this already gives a clear picture of how Thailand stands, despite all the “fake news”….

    • Johnny B.G says up

Doesn't this just have to do with a trend that will be broken for the car industry once that same industry has seen the light in the development of electric cars?

For the other professions in the list, if true, that would just be a healthy cleanup. 4 Male/female for a task that is done by a person in the West can also be done by a person here.
Those who drop out can always go to the service sector and, in addition, they can also simply receive a benefit from Social Security or compensation from the employer.
It's just a pity that not everyone has that knowledge.

    • fred says up

If you leave out all the positive economic news and only report some layoffs here and there, this gives a wrong picture.
Investments in Thailand continue at a hellish pace. Car production is growing, airports and seaports are expanding at a hellish pace.
But yes, it is the wet dream of many farangs that Thailand ends up in an economic crisis in the hope that they will get a little more for their euros.
It will remain a dream for the first 20 years

  11. Ruud NK says up

    Best.
Care for the poorest in society and introduce a kind of child benefit.

    worst.
Not giving an open card about the events of 2010 and bringing those responsible for the deaths to justice.

  12. janbeute says up

The strong increase again since the last Years of yaba use and the accompanying misery, see it daily around me.
Corruption is still at the same level as before
Traffic safety and death toll, nothing changed at all.
    Worse economy.
Environment like smog in the north , only got worse .
Elites get richer and common people poorer
I do not see any progress with this leader in recent years .
Stability and tranquility are only experienced as positive, no wonder if fear reigns among the population.
More politics and friends descending to the Chinese side Mr LI and co, and more distanced from the west.
Nonsensical and money-wasting purchase of submarines and other military equipment, incidentally also from China.
A police apparatus that is still not functioning properly.
Decreasing number of English speaking students at all levels than before.
Education at a still and in my opinion increasingly worse level than before.
Those are just a few things I can list from personal experience.

    Jan Beute.

The best decision, to finally call elections.

The worst decision.to manipulate those same elections in such a way that it became a farce.

  14. RuudB says up

Don't be fooled by calling the "challenge" a good and a bad decision, because by participating in this game you are actually acknowledging that this government is a legitimate one, and it is not. In May 2014 an elected government was overthrown and a junta took over. Of course, decisions have been taken in recent years that yield more or less good or bad results here and there. But what has become of the "road to democracy" with which the junta started to run the country? Evaluate that too!

    • Rob V says up

When I ask myself whether the few good things could have been achieved under a democratically elected government, I say yes. Had the bad things (new constitution including Senate selected by the junta, curtailment of human rights, increase of fear, increase of inequality etc) also happened under a democratic government? Mostly certainly not.

In short, the score is far below freezing if you ask me. Yet there are people who are grateful to this government. A bit like Hells Angels beat you up, rob you and set your house on fire and then the fire brigade comes consisting of Hells Angels. The pure optimist says that his house was already in need of renovation… (the red-yellow battle was largely a fake conflict, the PDRC aimed for confrontation, the army initially refused to restore order, only when things really went wrong people intervened, not against the violent demonstrators but by deposing the government, and we could forget about those new elections that were being held).

With the violations of the then constitution, Prayut and his friends should receive life imprisonment or the death penalty. But Thailand has a history of not holding civil servants accountable due to national interest…

  15. l.low size says up

    Advantage: already mentioned

    Downside:
    -introduction of Article 44
national anthem of Prayuth on schools.
    -do not allow democratic reforms:
*Phuea Thai Party *Future Forward Party and other.
-little political insight – nepotism Prawit Wongsuwan, Premchai Karnasutrai
-no ban on chemicals, no decision on tackling pollution.
