In total, about two-thirds of the Dutch population want to go on summer vacation this year. Approximately 7,6 million Dutch people want to go abroad this summer and 2,5 million Dutch people opt for a summer holiday in their own country.

About 600.000 Dutch people have not yet made a choice for a domestic or foreign holiday. This emerged from large-scale research that NBTC-NIPO Research carried out at the beginning of April into the holiday plans of the Dutch population.

The number of holiday plans for summer is growing again

The number of summer holiday plans has risen again for the first time since 2011. About 10,7 million Dutch people want to go on holiday next summer. The number of Dutch people with summer holiday plans is therefore more than 150.000 higher than last year (+1,5%).

France and Spain most popular foreign destinations

About 7,6 million Dutch people are planning to go abroad next summer. This is about 100.000 more than last year (+1,5%). France remains the number one foreign destination this summer with 1,3 million plans. Followed by Spain and Germany with one million and 750.000 plans respectively. Compared to last year, there are considerably more plans for Spain (+150.000 plans). There are also more plans for (distant) flying holidays (+5%).

About 2,5 million Dutch people want to spend the summer holidays in their own country; that is almost 50.000 less than the year before (-1,5%). Most domestic plans concern a holiday in a bungalow (more than 1 million).

A growing group of Dutch people (600.000) do have plans to go away this summer, but do not yet know whether that will be a domestic or foreign holiday.

Almost 30% of holidaymakers have yet to book

Around sixty percent of all plans for a domestic or foreign summer holiday have already been recorded in a booking at the beginning of April. Almost thirty percent of holidaymakers still have to book and more than ten percent go on spec.
