Barely recovered from the abuse of a British tourist couple and son, Thailand is once again rocked by senseless violence. Six young men assaulted and killed a disabled man on Sunday.

A 36-year-old disabled bread delivery boy was verbally abused by six boys in Chokchai (Nakhon Ratchasima) on Sunday morning after an incident with a motorbike. The man did not accept that and demanded an apology from the boys. The six suspects then assaulted the man. The victim died from a stab to the neck.

A bystander tried to help the victim but was threatened with a knife.

An interesting detail is that four of the six suspects have a father who works for the police. But the Thai police assures that the family ties will not affect the investigation. “It doesn't matter who they are. Punishments are based on facts,” says acting police commissioner Sanit.

One of the suspects admitted to drinking. So far, one father of the perpetrators has apologized to the older sister of the killed disabled man.

“It doesn't matter who they are. Punishments are based on facts,” says acting police commissioner Sanit. I had a good laugh at this one. In Thailand you can get away with murder as long as you come from a wealthy family, we all know the stories about the rich kids who drive people to death and simply get away with it. If your father works in a good position, you are soon “innocent”.

I would like to see a conversation with “Prayut” on TV. And hear what he has to say. And what measures are taken from him….

Given the size of the police force, almost everyone has some family member on the force.
Possibly the perpetrators also knew each other, because the parents knew each other from their work at the police.
Then it is not so special that four of them had a father in the police force.

The police force in Thailand has about 250.000 police officers. That is about 0.3% of the population. That is 1.2% of families. Then I think 4 out of 6, so 66.6%, is a slight over-representation. In addition, the fathers involved all work as police officers in the district where the offense took place, and where it is now being 'handled'. I think it would be a bit more honest if that were done by another district or police department.

When those guys have had a drink, they often do things like this, they quickly step on their toes and then pass over after violence.
Hope they are severely punished and let the population know, maybe that will help a little bit.

Dear editor, Chochai means Chokchai 4, a side street of Lat Phrao in Bangkok, so no Nakon Ratchasima!

There are six murders per 100.000 inhabitants per year in Thailand. That's 4200 per year or 12 (twelve!!) per DAY, the same as in the United States. (Netherlands 1 in 100.000). In some places and times more than average, of course.

And a few years ago they wanted to convince me that disabled people are very respected in Thailand, so not… Or was that a few years and then I'm talking about 5 years ago or so that we were in a different Thai era.
