Travel insurer De Europeesche has recently received a number of reports from holidaymakers whose travel documents were stolen during the flight. Because this creates a very unpleasant situation for travelers, the insurer wants to warn against this.

De Europeesche advises travelers to always carry travel documents with them during the flight.

Theft during a flight causes additional problems

Depending on when a travel document is stolen, travelers can take various measures. In all cases you must report this to the police in the country where the theft took place.

  • Your passport is stolen in the Netherlands before the trip. In this case, you can apply for an emergency document, even just before your holiday, and still go on holiday. At least, if the country of destination accepts your emergency document. Because that does not apply to all countries. Inquire about this at the embassy of your holiday destination. There are conditions for applying for an emergency passport. These can be found on the website of the National government.
  • Your passport is stolen at your holiday destination. In this case you can go to the embassy of your holiday destination for assistance. This will take some time, but hopefully you can enjoy your holiday again soon. Within the EU it is often also possible to travel back with a so-called laissez-passer, a temporary document that must be issued by the country of destination, or with a proof of declaration. Please inquire with your airline.
  • Your passport is stolen during the flight. Then you find yourself in an extra difficult situation. You are not allowed to enter the country of destination to arrange a new passport on the spot. For this you have to go to the embassy, which is located in the country that will not let you enter without travel documents. Applying for a so-called laissez-passer is certainly not easy. Your identity must be verified and that information must come from the Netherlands. So if you don't want to get stuck at the airport for days, there is only one option, and that is to go back to the Netherlands to arrange everything there. Your holiday pleasure is then hard to find.
Advice: also carry travel documents with you during the flight

Recent damage reports prove that it is possible that theft of travel documents can take place during the flight. That is why the Europeesche advises:

  • Do not store travel documents in hand luggage that is behind a luggage cover somewhere in the aircraft. Instead, always carry your travel documents with you, or keep them in sight at all times.
  • It is also always wise to scan your travel documents and send them to your e-mail address, so that you still have your details at hand in the event of loss or theft.
  • If your passport is stolen, contact the emergency center of your travel insurer immediately. They can help you with the address and telephone number of the relevant embassy or consulate.

I always take a few photocopies of my passport. One in my pocket, in my suitcase and in my hand luggage. I leave the original at the hotel.

First thing to do when you are in TH: make a photocopy / scan of your passport, which also has the entry stamp and that stapled and completed card. Very useful, if the Immigration wants to verify your entry into Thailand.
If you lose your pass and everything in TH, to the police for proof of missing person, to the embassy for and Laissez Passer and to Immigration for an update of that income stamp and card. DO NOT wait until you get to the airport, because without that card, immigration won't let you leave the country. Whatever the NL embassy may tell you. Unfortunately, own experience.

What does someone want with my travel documents , I do not understand .

That a passport can be stolen that could be.

I do what others have already mentioned above. Make copies of everything. You should still have one for extensions after 90 days. My passport goes in the cupboard until I need it (it can also be stolen there). Walk around with a copy all the time. If I wear a passport on my body, it becomes damp to wet after a short time and becomes difficult to read after some time.

No problems with the body scan before the flight?

    Hello Jack

Not If you put on the shoulder holster wallet after this body scan
If you do wear it, you will probably be summoned to take off your sweater in the dressing room.

I think this option is safe, also in the country of destination!
The large banknotes are safely stored.
Together in use of your regular wallet, or if you have 10.000 bth
7000bth in shoulder holster wallet 3000bth in regular wallet.
Here too money that you are not showing off with your shoulder holster wallet with money.

Passport debit cards and credit cards are safe during your trip.

So during a trip, I only use it for safe storage until the country of destination
After this for large bills, with a normal wallet. Then you have a hotel safe for your passport.

    Also ideal against pickpockets.

      @Omax73.
Normally I have a so-called holster on my body with passport, my cards and some cash. China Airlines has had a body scan control for a few years now. At first I encountered problems. After the scan, they asked me to show them the suspicious object. Fortunately, I was able to avoid an upper body stripping by showing them this secret compartment at length. On the following flights I put my papers in a zip pocket in my travel jacket to be scanned and therefore easily passed the hand luggage scan. Then I “hide” everything again during a short visit to the toilet. Although I have already flown from AMS to BKK 5 times, I have never had the negative feeling that someone on the plane would want to steal my small laptop from between my feet. In that case, much more could be stolen? Just mind your business a bit and sleep well during the flight!
PS. The zippers in your zip-off trousers are also noticed during the body scan, but that is not a problem at all. At most, they can feel your legs for a while. Just let them do! it's all because of a safe flight.
