Bars, pubs and other entertainment venues are not happy with the strict corona rules that the government has devised. A decision on the so-called fifth phase of the lockdown relaxation will be made on Friday. Operators hope that they can open on July 1, many of them have now run into financial problems.

Whether the situation will improve if they are allowed to open doors again remains to be seen. The government has come up with no fewer than 22 rules that they must adhere to. for example, no dancing is allowed and groups of visitors may not consist of more than 5 people.

President Sanga of the Khao San Business Association says that the rules for nightlife are stricter than those for film crews, for example. In addition, people will go out less because of the economic crisis caused by Covid-19.

Sanga admits operators have no choice but to comply, but he hopes they will be relaxed a week after they come into effect.

    For completeness.

However, the reopening of the infamous Thai nightlife must take place under strict adherence to 22 rules to avoid the risk of coronavirus infection - and they have it all:

    1. Constant monitoring of guest numbers to ensure venues are not crowded.

    2. Temperature screening of all guests and employees.

    3. Free provision of alcoholic hand sanitizer gel at all entrances to the premises and also within the entertainment venues as required.

    4. Ensuring host group size does not exceed 5 people.

    5. Ensuring social distancing in queues.

    6. Make sure that all tables are set up at a minimum distance of 2 meters from each other or separated from each other (e.g. by partitions).

    7. Make sure there is a minimum distance of 1 meter between all seats.

    8. Make sure the location is well ventilated.

    9. Only eating and drinking is allowed.

    10. Drinks can only be sold individually, shared containers (e.g. buckets) or ice buckets for shared use within your own group are prohibited.

    11. The operating staff is obliged to wear a nose and mouth protection mask or a face shield at all times.

    12. The stage or performance area of shows must be separated from the audience, the audience must sit or stand at least 2 meters away from the stage or performance area.

    13. All visitors or performing show performers (e.g. DJs, MCs, musicians, A-Go-Go dancers etc.) are required to wear face protection at all times.

    14. Visitors should not be noisy or walk around in the room if this is not necessary.

    15. If sharing food or drink cannot be avoided, everyone at the table should be equipped with an individual serving spoon or glass.

    16. The toilets should be cleaned every 30 to 60 minutes.

    17. All tables, chairs and frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned regularly.

    18. It is forbidden to organize sports competitions or any other form of competitions that attract large numbers of visitors.

    19. Video games / slot machines and pub games such as billiards / pool or darts are prohibited.

    20. Social distancing rules apply in smoking areas.

    21. Service personnel (e.g. barmaids) or marketing representatives (e.g. for drink promotions) are not allowed to sit with guests.

They don't talk about the money that those owners have earned over the years.
Only the little ones get away and close

  3. Eric says up

    So it's totally ridiculous.
There must be 1 m between each guest at the table, while you come together in the same car or are allowed to sleep together.
And so we can continue like keeping the borders and airport closed to international traffic that holds many hostage inside or outside Thailand.

Many oppressive rules, which in a country without corona for 30 days, have no serious basis and are therefore not understandable or sensible. Very sad for the patrons.

    1. The number of customers should be controlled all the time, not overcrowded locations. An exact number of capacity levels was not given.
    2. Temperature check must be performed for all customers and staff
    3. Provide alcohol gel for hand washing at the entrance, gel is available everywhere and easy to access for hand washing.
    4. No more than 5 people in a group, per table or in front of a live entertainment venue stage.
    5. There should be a proper queuing system to enter the venue for larger venues and the queue should be socially distanced.
    6. Tables must be at least two meters apart or there must be a partition or barrier between them.
    7. Chairs should be arranged at each table. People must sit, not stand. Chairs should not be moved and are one meter apart.
    8. The company must have good ventilation.
    9. Only eating and drinking is allowed, no singing or dancing is allowed.
    10. No more bottle sales. A bottle can be purchased but must be poured and iced by the wait staff and not kept at the table, not by a group at the table, no mixed use of glasses and buckets allowed.
    11. Use disposable menus / no menus that everyone can touch continuously.
    12. All employees must wear a mask and face shield.
    13. Stage or performance area must have a partition, such as a plastic partition, between the audience and the performer, including DJs. If a partition is already present, that would be acceptable.
    14. A singer must wear a face shield, but does not need a mask. Anyone speaking on stage or using a microphone must wear a face shield.
    15. There must be someone, possibly security, to make sure the rules are followed.
    16. Food, if served, should not be served on shared plates or cutlery. One meal per person.
    17. Toilet must be cleaned and fully disinfected at least once an hour.
    18. At least once a day, the entire company and every tangible service must be completely disinfected and cleaned.
    19. No competitions such as a dance competition or dart competitions may be organized.
    20. No use of pool tables, darts, game cabinets or other similar items.
    21. Specific smoking areas, where applicable, should be socially distanced.
    22. Staff are not allowed to toast with customers.

I am in favor of the phased introduction of liberating measures, but exaggerating is also an art. Survival is second, but it is at least as important to get the economy going again. This seriously threatens the viability of many companies. Somewhat realistic relationships between safety and viability should be sought. A contribution from the government for the operators in connection with the appointment of extra staff to ensure that all these requirements run smoothly is the least that can be done, other than emptying the basket. Keeping the testing times as short as possible. After two weeks you already know whether there are new infections and if they do not occur, you will drastically reduce them to normal proportions. Life is full of dangers and as we know they can certainly be found in Thailand, with vermin and traffic and alcohol abuse to name a few. A person also has his own responsibility and if it is taken consciously there will be no more landslide. This will also mean that the weak or sick among us must consciously continue to avoid the crowds for the time being. For the vast majority of the population, things will run wild in Thailand, but for the time being, with due observance of protective measures in places that matter. Exaggeration should not be avoided and will not produce the desired result, but will result in annoyance and unruly behaviour. Support is and remains essential.

I will let this pass me by , so it is more oppressive to me than a relaxing outing , I prefer to stay indoors and take a brisk walk during the day .

    Understanding for measures, but this?

  8. Mike says up

In a country that is closed and where not 4 person from within the borders has become ill in the past 1 weeks, the current measures are completely out of all proportion. The 14 temperature checks, the 6x checking in and out at the shopping mall and supermarkets, the face masks on the beach and so on, are a show we perform for what?

Let's not forget that the entire corona crisis in Thailand has caused fewer deaths in 4 months than in 1 day. Do we close all roads, ban motorcycles and put a wheel clamp on all cars because they cause 124x (Really do the math) more victims than this exaggerated flu ???

    • Hans Bosch says up

And there are still people who call Covid-10 an exaggerated flu. Comparisons with deaths in traffic or due to malaria etc. are also of a completely different order.
      Go talk in Brazil: https://www.telegraaf.nl/nieuws/344410353/latijns-amerika-epicentrum-corona-meer-dan-100-000-doden

      • In a population of 210 million inhabitants, that is not too bad. Don't forget that health care in Brazil is not very high quality. I wouldn't be surprised if so many people also die from the annual flu.

        • Tino Kuis says up

Sorry, Peter, that is very disappointing. There are about 130.000 deaths per month in Brazil and now 50.000 deaths per month from Covid-19, which is 1/3 of the total number of deaths in the entire country. That is very much. If you then look locally in Brazil, that will be an even larger percentage

I think it's fine to put things into perspective, or rather to nuance them. How does the virus spread? Which measures are good and which are not? Shouldn't we take more local measures? Are the measures in Thailand too strict given the low number of infected? etc.

But the virus is in no way comparable to the annual influenza.

          • You can see the numbers in this graph. If you look at the number of deaths per million, Brazil is doing even better than the Netherlands: https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/ It is mainly the big cities where it hits: https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/world/americas/brazil-coronavirus-cases.html The slums are particularly affected. There are many diseases and most of them are severely malnourished. Tens of millions of people live in those neighborhoods (info borrowed from my source).

It is a well-known trick of the prophets of doom to point to countries where there is an outbreak without stating the underlying reasons.
This also applies to the figures in the Netherlands. The RIVM itself has announced that 99% of the deaths in NL are over 50 years old. Subtract the deaths in nursing homes from that, which is 50%, which leaves a small group of people who mainly had underlying suffering and who are also a risk factor in a normal flu wave. Conclusion For everyone under 50 years of age, Covid-19 is no more than a flu and for some a serious flu.

            • Tino Kuis says up

All well and good, Peter, and you can say a lot about the different countries, areas, etc., but all figures show that the death rate for the corona virus is a lot higher than for the flu. Then we'll talk further.

And you're right that for people under 50 and people with no underlying ailments, it's almost equivalent to having the flu. So what? Is it therefore less serious overall? I think that's manipulating with numbers. Don't those old people matter then? Can't you add that to the death rate?

          • HarryN says up

I don't know where you get those 50000 deaths a month. Covid(Corona virus) from there. To date, so today June 23, there have been 52645 deaths since the outbreak in early April, there are still 479916 active cases in Brazil (on a population of 209 million people)

            • Tino Kuis says up

You're right, HarryN, that should be "30.000 deaths in the last month." Sorry. That means that in the past month not 1/3 but 1/4 of all deaths were covid-19. Measured all over Brazil. That percentage will be much higher in the fires. That's not something to dismiss.

        • Hans Bosch says up

Dear Peter, then I would just google it again. Until June 3, 199 deaths from flu. Due to Covid-19 so far 100.000. It is difficult to convince non-believers that they are wrong.

          • Dear Hans, the mortality of Covid-19 is even lower than with influenza. There are some regional differences because there are now several mutations of Covid-19. But it is certainly not a killer virus. It's just a solid flu, nothing more and nothing less. I can recommend you this video: https://youtu.be/zvqoQn7R-pE by professor of experimental immunology Pierre Capel. Very enlightening.

            • Hans Bosch says up

If I say that God does not exist and you continue to believe in it, we will never be able to convince each other. You have to Google more, then you will see the light.

              common questions
Is the coronavirus disease more severe than the flu?
COVID-19 causes more severe illness than seasonal influenza.

While many people globally have built up immunity to seasonal flu strains, COVID-19 is a new virus to which no one has immunity. That means more people are susceptible to infection, and some will suffer severe disease.

Globally, about 3.4% of reported COVID-19 cases have died. By comparison, seasonal flu generally kills far fewer than 1% of those infected.

              • Yes, but it's like any other discussion, anyone can find sources and experts who just now endorse their opinion. If Covid-19 is really that bad, Thailandblog would have had half as many readers because they were under the green sod. Fortunately that is not the case 😉

                • Tino Kuis says up

OK, Peter, ALL the sources I consulted say that the coronavirus is more deadly than the regular seasonal flu. How much more deadly? That in turn ranges from 10 (probably) to 30 (unlikely) times as high. Furthermore, hospitals have never been called upon during an ordinary flu epidemic. And we now also know that chronic complaints after surviving Covid-19 are much more common than with a flu. Those are the facts. Then you can form opinions. If you deny the above facts then further discussion is pointless.

                • The RIVM itself has announced that 99% of the deaths in NL are over 50 years old. Subtract the deaths in nursing homes from that, which is 50%, and that leaves a small group of people who mainly had underlying suffering and who are also a risk factor in a normal flu wave. Wrong Tino I still have an article from Omroep Brabant on my smartphone: Influenza epidemic causes crowded hospitals and a shortage of beds, there are daily admission stops. ( Omroep Brabant Wednesday 21 February 2018 11.10). Or Dagblad van het Noorden 10 April 2018 : Is the flu finally on its way back after more than 8000 deaths?
I therefore do not know which sources you consulted. WE are now just at 6000 and many with underlying illnesses.

Then that immunity: how is it possible that people become infected but are not bothered at all. Are asymptomatic and some find some discomfort for 2 or 3 days.
Pierre Capal also indicates that children up to the age of 16 have no chance of becoming infected and that schools should not be closed at all.

          • HarryN says up

Hans where is the source of 199 flu deaths??? In the Netherlands, this is suddenly not yet known and those figures will only be available in the autumn (RIVM).

          • HarryN says up

Just this Hans Lees Opiniez.com the art. Stop the corona emergency law: dated 23 June, the RIVM admits on 4 June that only 98% do not become ill or do not become life-threateningly ill. 2% ends up in hospital and only 0,35% in ICU, of which about half die. So it is no more serious than the regular seasonal flu. Ok, as the author rightly points out, he and I wouldn't like to be among those cases, but I'm really not worried.

      • HarryN says up

Yes, Hans, it really is an exaggerated flu. Just took another look at Professor Pierre Capal. I can give you a number of websites that really say that. Then the Telegraaf with its 100.00 dead. The most correct figure on June 23 17.50 pm is 52645. DE telegraaf is a sensational newspaper with headlines: Brazil more than 1 million infections!!!! I can tell you that number is totally irrelevant. The number of deaths is the same as in the Netherlands: how many died FROM the virus or WITH the virus. How old are the deceased and with what underlying diseases did they die??? We are still far from the number of deaths compared to 2018.
What are you afraid of Hans???

I have read it, dear HarryN. Yes, a lot went wrong, what else did you expect? There are a lot of personal experiences in it that I don't want to dismiss but that say little about the big picture. I don't believe there was any intent or dark forces behind it.
The last bit is about vaccines and Billy. I consider that to be utter nonsense. Without a vaccine, you might have died of smallpox.

  9. Andre Jacobs says up

    Dear,
In the past I could always agree for 98% with all measures. Sometimes a bit absurd, but still, every bit helps. But today, after there have been no new domestic infections for 4 weeks, it is totally absurd to apply even 1 single measure in the country. All new infections come from abroad!! Of course, the virus continues to rage outside Thailand. So all large and small border crossings, border smuggling roads, very strictly guarded. No one else comes in. Once outside, it stays outside. And for anyone entering through any airport, a mandatory 14-day quarantine is required. No exceptions !! Official paper or not!! sitting inside for 14 days. No tourists, from anywhere. Only a drastic relaxation for married people, and if possible also for unmarried couples provided proof of a lasting relationship through photos and the like. But the 14-day quarantine also applies here. No exceptions !! What are now 14 days if you are reunited with your loved one afterwards. And if one adheres to these strict border and airport rules, then the interior is safe and all other rules are superfluous. Then Thailand can breathe again and continue rowing with the belts it has. Then the domestic economy can revive. It's a survival scenario, but probably better than what's happening now. And if the state would finally do a little more to feed their own people, to provide employment, many lost jobs may have been partially absorbed. Even tourism could partially revive. If every tourist is willing to stay indoors for 14 days, he is welcome. My Thai stepson is coming to visit in October for 4 weeks and he answered me after noticing this: "Okay that's good, then I can stay with my girlfriend and you for another 2 weeks!". Times are different now, if you close your eyes, I invite you to all countries where the virus is still prevalent, to take a look at the death toll. I would also have liked to spend my leave in Belgium from 18/06 to 15/07 and see my children and grandchildren again. My parents aged 84/85 can hug, to see my 4 grandchildren, one of whom was only born in March!! To celebrate my 60th birthday on 07/07 between my siblings and children, but all these plans are also canceled !! Missing the planned five-year class reunion with 18 to 20 old schoolmates. We all have to make sacrifices, even if you stay behind in Thailand or can't come back to Thailand or your home country. This is a new world, and as long as there are no effective cures, this will be the new world policy for now. I wish everyone a safe ride through this vale of tears and wish everyone strength to endure all suffering with hope in mind. Kind regards Andre
