It is a sad day to announce that one of the two English speaking newspapers in Thailand in printed form will disappear.

The Nation announces that they have given up the fight after 48 years and stop the paper newspaper. This makes the Bangkok Post the only Thai daily newspaper in the English language. The last edition of the printed The Nation is scheduled for the end of June this year.

Unavoidable

Somchai Meesen, chief executive officer of the Nation Multimedia Group Plc (NMG), said in a TB interview that the decision was inevitable to halt years of losses. “Over the last five years, The Nation has suffered a loss of 30 million baht a year, mainly due to many people reading the news online and ad revenues falling continuously.”

Research

The CEO cited a recent survey showing that only 36% of The Nation's readers live in Thailand. Most of the readers, namely 64% live abroad, of which 25% in the United States. It means that most readers of The Nation don't buy the print newspaper, but read the articles on the website.

Future

The Nation will focus on the digital market, which is expected to continue to grow. There will therefore be no layoffs of journalists or other staff at the newspaper. All attention will soon be devoted to the website, to which it will be added that an audio edition of the newspaper will appear. There will also be an addition to the Chinese language website in October.

But good for the environment. That may also be said. Could more newspapers (old trees) take an example.

Well, Thailandblog has also not been available in the paper edition for many years 🙂

There is 2x a 'The best of Thailand blog' booklet printed for charity. Sometimes paper is still nice or nice. 🙂

Ah I didn't know that! Nice indeed.

  3. The newspaper contains the news of yesterday and the day before yesterday. Today's news is online. Another problem is that there are virtually no independent journalists with an objective view. Usually you read their personal opinion with a sauce of their own political preference over it.

Rather good news for me because The Nation in the hotel will be forced to be replaced by The Bangkok Post, the newspaper that I personally like better.
