The Thai Ministry of Health has pledged stricter controls on organ transplants. The reason for this is the arrest of a woman in Cambodia who allegedly bought kidneys. These were resold to wealthy Cambodian patients undergoing transplants in Thailand.

The Thai authorities immediately launched an investigation. For example, all 26 hospitals where transplants are performed are checked. In Thailand, only blood relatives or spouses may donate an organ after at least three years of marriage.

The woman arrested in Cambodia has now admitted that she illegally traded in organs. She paid at least five Cambodians 4.500 euros for a kidney. A fortune in Cambodia, where a teacher receives a salary of about 70 euros per month. The organs were sold to wealthy Cambodians waiting for a transplant in Thailand. They then paid a multiple for it. The woman worked with interpreters who assisted patients in Thai hospitals.

  1. Good heavens Roger says up

I still wonder what an organ transplant is worth in Thailand. Surely the organs to be transplanted must at least match the patient's blood group? Can this be adequately checked for illegally purchased organs? I didn't think so.
