Thai Airways International resumes flights to Europe
Thai Airways International (THAI) is now flying to Europe again after Pakistan closed its airspace due to skirmishes with neighboring India.
There are now flights over China instead of Pakistan. THAI canceled all flights to Europe on Wednesday, leaving more than 4.000 passengers Suvarnabhumi airport got stuck. Yesterday, some 3.000 passengers were stranded at the airport. Thira Buasi, THAI's ground operator control director, says they expect to leave within three days. The airline is operating three additional flights to Frankfurt, Paris and London.
A total of 16 inbound and 20 outbound flights were canceled on Wednesday and Thursday, said Suvarnabhumi airport general manager Suthirawat. Three flights had to return yesterday. The 800 passengers were offered free hotel accommodation. Pakistan's airspace has since been reopened.
The closures followed a clash between the Indian and Pakistani air forces over disputed Kashmir. Indian aircraft carried out an airstrike on extremists in the Pakistani part of Kashmir on Tuesday. The Pakistani anti-aircraft and air force responded to this.
Lots of nuisance
The closure of the airspace over Pakistan has seriously disrupted air traffic between Europe and Southeast Asia in particular. For example, planes had to fly around and sometimes a stopover had to be made to refuel with kerosene. For example, several Boeing 777s from British Airways, Air France and KLM were seen at Bucharest airport on Wednesday.

We leave on Sunday from Brussels to Bangkok with Thai Airways … exciting. over China probably fly longer have a connection there to Phuket!
Airlines like EVA, Emirates, Qatar are not affected by anything… don't understand that a little detour leads to these problems… a matter of planning. You can change a flight plan up to 1 hour in advance, after which any air traffic controller can change your plan without you having asked. Seems like a bureaucracy issue to me.
Of course, flight routes also have a maximum capacity……….
Left yesterday afternoon from Brussels, via Russia and China with Thai Airways. Took 90 minutes longer.
