Home » News from Thailand » Thai government wants to strengthen relations with North Korea
The military government in Thailand wants to strengthen relations with North Korea. At the start of a visit by Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong to Bangkok, cultural exchange and technical cooperation, as well as cooperation in agriculture, public health and tourism, were discussed, the Thai foreign ministry announced.
This is remarkable because North Korea has become largely isolated internationally under the third generation of Kim rulers.
Some old sores had to be massaged away during the meeting of the ministers. For example, Korea still has a debt to Thailand regarding the supply of rice. North Korea has still not paid the bill. And then there is the case of the Thai who disappeared in 1978, which has attracted the attention of the North Korean authorities.
Thailand is considering opening an embassy in Pyongyang. Five of the ten Asean countries have a diplomatic mission in the North Korean capital. North Korea in turn welcomes Thai investors.

Have you ever eaten in a North Korean restaurant in Laos? Doesn't seem like an asset to Thailand to me.
Seems like a very bad thing to me. This is very bad for Thailand's reputation. However, it says all the more about the current military junta…
So, now things are really moving in the right direction with Thailand. That's a good idea, establishing ties with a country that has a degrading, dictatorial regime. Well, if the rest of the world doesn't want to do it, then Thailand should do it. I already wouldn't want to try N Korean food in protest.
Waaawww….
Now Thailand is moving further and further away from Western countries….
Western tourism is already declining…. Westerners living in Thailand are more or less being chased out of the country…
Then we have those fishermen-slaves…
What's going on here?
Greetings,
evans.
Evans, have not seen that news elsewhere, very curious where you get the information that Westerners living in Thailand are being chased out of the country?
I do not see that Westerners are more or less being chased out of the country now that Thailand is strengthening ties with North Korea. There are already several countries that have done this, but not much publicity has been given to this.
See my answer to your question below.
Nico B
Actually unbelievable.
You may ask yourself, where are we going as expats in this country.
It's all very unreliable anyway.
Close contacts with Russia and now North Korea.
That cannot be the intention of a country that actually owes everything to it
countries where democracy is a given and where your economy has benefited for years.
Are the Thais going to export rice and sell cars in North Korea and Russia?
Of course in the rest of the world they can no longer sell their products.
Will also be blacklisted just like Russia.
Too bad for the Thai.
Of course also a pity for us expats. We end up in a complete gaos.
Cor.
When taking power, it was communicated that the military rule would be temporary with the aim of solving domestic problems. It has been apparent for some time that temporary is an elastic concept, but decisions about cooperation with a, in this case, totally backward and dictatorial regime such as that of North Korea, where human rights mean nothing, also exceed the self-appointed powers of the current Thai leaders. Perhaps a response to the international criticism of the current Thai administrator(s)? In my opinion, Thailand is increasingly separating itself from the international community in this way and that certainly seems to me an undesirable development for a democratic Thailand.
Today in the news that a North Korean minister has been executed because, as the responsible official charged with preserving foresty, he criticized decisions by leader Kim who has a different policy in mind. As a minister, you must only implement the policies of great leader Kim with blinders on and not express criticism, otherwise you will be lost. The idea of being associated with such a regime is food for thought. Russians, Chinese and North Koreans in and ex-Pats out will not contribute to improving the slipping economy in the long term.
Evans, what's going on here? … Clearly, a great power shift from USA and EU to Asia. You actually said it yourself, fewer Western tourists, right and more … Chinese.
Thailand has to get rid of its rice and fish, they can use that in North Korea.
A logical response to the meddling and cheating of the USA and EU with regard to. human rights, fishermen, etc. What I think about that is another matter, but that is not an answer to your question.
Thailand is tired of the USA trying to dictate to them how things should be done here.
Asia is joining forces as a counterweight, Asean, among others, Russia and China are doing the same.
What to think of the Chinese devaluing the yuan, the USA obviously does not agree, but the actually bankrupt US$ is being increasingly eliminated.
Thailand and Myanmar will trade currencies with each other in their countries, Russia and China will do the same, the Brics ditto, they have set up their own kind of IMF, as a counterweight to the US$.
So the conclusion to what is going on here anyway? … an unprecedented shift in power in the world, strengthening contacts with North Korea, among others, is part of that, whether we think this is right or not.
Nico B
North Korea?? Thailand has a lot to expect from that. Namely advice on how to set up a real dictatorship (including executions of deputy prime ministers and relatives in important posts if they threaten to show deviant behaviour).
Perhaps North Korea can also provide submarines and HSLs? In exchange for excess thai rice?
The promised “elections” will take place in Thailand. Only I'm afraid that it will happen the North Korean way: so 1 party and 1 candidate......
