Prime Minister Prayut on Monday gave the go-ahead for the construction of two monorails in Bangkok. It concerns the 30-kilometer Yellow Line from Lat Phrao to Samrong, which will cost 52 billion baht, and the 34-kilometer Pink Line from Min Buri to Khae Rai, 34 km. Construction is already 3 to 5 percent advanced. BSR Venture is responsible for the construction of the monorail.

At the start of the construction of the Yellow and Pink Line, Prayut urged government departments not to let infrastructural projects be hindered by expropriation processes. That seems to be a problem because land prices on existing and future metro routes are skyrocketing.

On the routes of both monorails, the value of the land has increased five to ten times. As a result, expropriating land owned by private individuals has become increasingly difficult, according to the prime minister. According to him, the government is not able to bear these costs alone.

So they just have to pretend there are no laws?
Laws don't mean much anyway, but still...

If there is any difference at all, what is the difference with the skytrain?

The difference is that such a monorail cannot run on the BTS skytrain rails. Very handy to build a 4th train-like thing next to the Airport Rail, BTS and MRT metro instead of building more of the same.

MRT is privately owned, family owned. In addition, the other projects are from different companies, so why should they build the same thing? It's a good thing that the Yellow line starts at Ladphrao MRT station and ends at the Skytrain terminus, intersecting with the Airport link along the way; 3 beautiful transfer points. After all, the lines are also long and have many stations.
The advantage of a monorail is that it requires little maintenance compared to the double rail system, such as the Skytrain. Also read that unmanned vehicles will be used.
