New plan to save tourism in Thailand?
The Thai government has developed a plan to allow long-staying foreign visitors (snowbirds). It should be ready by the end of October, said Thosaporn Sirisumphand, secretary of the Center for Economic Situation Administration.
The plan aims to restore the ailing tourism sector, thereby saving millions of jobs. Foreigners who want to stay in Thailand for a longer period are obliged to quarantine for fourteen days after arrival, but after that they are allowed to travel throughout Thailand.
The government and companies weigh up the costs of limiting the number of infections and limiting the damage to the economy. It is estimated that the economy will shrink by 8,5 percent this year.
The tourism sector wants the government to lift the entry ban on international visitors, who account for two-thirds of tourism revenue. The industry hopes to save 3,27 million jobs, which the Thailand Development Research Institute estimates are now at risk.
An earlier plan to quarantine foreign tourists in Phuket first has been postponed.

It is a pity that they do not yet realize in Thailand that a 10-day quarantine is sufficient. That hurts a lot.
I understand 14 days of quarantine. But is the location/hotel designated by the authorities or can you decide for yourself where you will stay for those 14 days. I can imagine that an expensive hotel is not an option for many.
Gr Peter
Hi Peter ,, recently read that it is a body owned hotel ,,,, there were quite a lot of them and prices varied but it was quite expensive.
they take you there from the airport with a van, but I don't know if you could make your own choice.
I personally should also be there for my legal wedding but don't spend the money on it because you've lost a lot of money and after all haven't achieved anything yet, at least not me.
I am now working on a visa C (marriage in Belgium) and that will be fine.
She does not have to return to her country after the marriage and I save a trip because she comes with a one-way ticket
Greetings Bo
The Thai government should allow people to quarantine in their own home (with the family).
Yes Joop you are right I have a house in phitsanulok I can also go there for 14 days in carantaine the immigration is size 3 km from my house they can always come controller and that would be good for everyone
That will never happen. Then you still come into contact with others. And the government can't control it watertight.
As long as Thailand has a 0 covid policy, they will do everything they can to prevent the virus from entering the country.
peter, much has been written about this elsewhere but also on facebook. In principle, you can specify a hotel yourself from an ever-expanding list. Prices for whole stay, tests etc for the 14 days run from 35.000 to 200 baht. It seems quite difficult to make a booking. Many hotels are simply fully booked.
Yes, should and can we still believe this. ??
Only a week or two ago it was also reported that long-stayers could go to Thailand for up to 9 months after following the necessary covid19 rules.
A few days later, this plan was shelved.
And why no arrangement for the many foreigners who have been in a relationship for years without being married, but who still continue to support the family there. ??
What about farang who own property or condo. ???
Fear that many and important decisions still have to be made, however, the longer it all takes ……
This is a great plan, although my husband and I won't continue to use it this year, if at all. This will be the case at the end of autumn 2021 if it comes into effect. We have more than enough with 9 months.
@Jozef: I would like “the many foreigners who have been in a relationship for years without being married, but still support the family over there.” recommend that you also take advantage of this option. Afterwards, it is a matter of acting as you see fit, based on how circumstances in Thailand develop further. People can go to Thailand with a Non-O visa, or with a 3 month tourism visa and extend it in Thailand (pension, Thai marriage, family sponsorship). Thailand is slowly starting to think about opening up the country again. There are even more countries that are still closed. No reason to whine, I suppose. With time a solution will be found. The year 2020 is a lost year in many ways. It is what it is and that's it, my late grandfather used to say.
This government is a bunch of clowns, every day a new idea that is then not implemented.
2 weeks of quarantine will never be accepted by tourists. Could take a vb to the emirates that does have a workable system.
And yes, another plan that will probably end up in the Thai refrigerator within a week.
In my opinion, the rulers really have no idea of how and what, very unfortunate for all Thai people who are getting more and more hungry.
Opening up and no more mandatory quarantine in a specific hotel, but a verifiable private location, such as a rented or own apartment. How to check? Surely that should be possible; anklets or something like that.
Then the quarantine will be acceptable and more people will return or go on holiday for a longer period. In addition, simplifying the visa requirement and document flow will also make a big difference.
My wife also had to go into home quarantine for 14 days when she came here months ago.
It worked like this then; After registering, she and householders were not allowed to leave or make contact, food was put on the hook of the gate by the fam and after 14 days a health team came to fill in forms with my wife and Kees was ready.
Unfortunately, there was a foreigner who considered himself above the law and yet went on a short trip within 14 days, this was not appreciated, resulting in stricter control for him and the person who came after my wife's arrival, i.e. reporting every day and filling out forms. So it's not always the Thai's fault, as some think.
Let owners of condos in pattaya go to their own condo with their thai wife or girlfriend and with provision of food (can be brought by family or other service, eg cook yourself in condo) mandatory covid and temperature tests for 14 days and then after everything OK let go where they want.
Should certainly not be a problem to stay in your own condo for free for 2 weeks and not to come outside and with internet and TV and the possibility to clean everything yourself. I have 3 condos viewtalay 2 and there restaurants down there also that can deliver food to the door. But yes, Thais are boss in their country. Belgium and the Netherlands are being destroyed by illegal immigrants who destroy everything and set it on fire
Unfortunately, the Covid-19 virus is still circling and has increased in many parts of the world.
Thailand may only want to allow tourists / long stays with the strict requirements that you will have to meet.
The question is do you want that and what are the actual costs of this.
A flight has already been canceled with us and unfortunately that will be the case again in December, unless we choose the Quarantine option if this continues. We are certainly not going to do this.
The policy is indeed adjusted every 2 weeks, because as I read above, the Clowns at the top do not know what they are doing. I see it the same way, it is chaos and there are a lot of problems internally, plus the protests that will be held soon.
In my opinion, 2 things will have to change before Thailand becomes interesting to travel to again.
1) Resign from the current government system, preferably followed by a democracy. But yes that is possible
going to take a long time unless the poor and lovely people with no income really start colluding and for them
going to stand up straight, I hope for these people that they will do this. That way it can last longer.
2) A vaccine against the Covid-19, I do not yet see a solution in the current government policy that it
travel to Thailand in a fun way, unless you want to be locked up for 2 weeks,
and there will be very few of them.
I suspect that it will be a long time before we can travel back to Thailand, which is so beautiful. And we are very disappointed about that, we have also built our second life there and like to stay here, like many of us.
Let's just hope that everything passes quickly and the sky clears up again.
The sector hopes to save 3,27 jobs that are at risk.
Anyone have any idea how many million jobs have already been lost. ??
Obviously a hawker or street food seller is not included in the numbers.
So let's hope that this beautiful country opens its doors again, maybe with a shorter lockdown, because 2 weeks will be too long for many tourists.
Regards,
I don't understand why the Thai government is betting on this.
What do the retired winter visitors now bring to the overall tourism picture?
Quite little seems to me because they are often not those big spenders.
A mandatory corona test at the airport of departure and a test on arrival would be better.
If in this way all tourists can come again, people will really be helped.
I think those hibernators are big spenders. The tourism sector in southern Spain also lives from the winter visitors. That sector survives there mainly thanks to the pensioners.
These are usually older people and they don't see a euro more or less. They don't want to save anymore have some reserves and live under the motorcycle, it's now that we still have to enjoy it because tomorrow it may be too late.
Who spends the most? A hibernator who spends 6 x 6 euros during 1500 months or a tourist who spends 1 euros during 2000 month?
Fred's statement is, of course, incorrect. 1 long-stayer, who spends 6 months 1500Eu/m, therefore comes to 9.000 Eu. On the other hand, we set 6 tourist/m every 1 months, because they always change, who, according to his statement, spend 2000Eu/m, then I come to 12000EU. And after all, there are more tourists than long-stayers.
Then there will have to be flights first. And if the demands of that order are as they are today, I think that many will no longer see the trees for the wood.
Don't forget that those hibernators are often older people and they don't feel like walking to an embassy 17 times if someone is already available there.
We have been going to Thailand for 28 years and always buy tickets in the spring after traveling around a lot we now usually stay in jomtien in that apartment I can stay for about ten days before we go out again then we will go for the first 2 weeks but not eating out but we do have to buy a phone with internet and stock up on food and drinks and we can go to the swimming pool at our apartment but first to Phuket and then back to jomtien is not an option and when will everything take effect our ticket are on 5 Nov and how is the visa then
It is similar to the 90-day O visa for 50+ with multiple entries.
With the difference that you can extend the now planned visa at immigration [instead of a visa run to Cambodia]
