The smog nuisance in the north of Thailand is expected to be less serious this year than in previous years thanks to the weather conditions that are more favorable, namely not too dry and less foggy.

The number of places with severe smog in Chiang Rai will be 20 percent less this summer, according to environment minister Surasak. So far it is already half less compared to last year. According to the minister, the number of forest fires has been reduced thanks to better cooperation between government services and information to farmers.

According to the Asean Specialized Meteorological Center, the number of places with smog reported so far is the lowest since 2010 and is forecast to continue until the middle of this year. However, Thailand, Cambodia and Myanmar will again experience cross-border air pollution in March and April.

The smog is caused by farmers who set fire to harvest residues and also deliberately start forest fires in order to gain more agricultural land.

That is good news and we are waiting.

Incidentally, the farmers do not light the forest floor to gain land, but to create extra and free better soil so that expensive mushrooms can grow.

Also here in Chiang Mai it is clear to see that the air quality is better.
The mountains around Chiang Mai can, until now, be seen almost every day.

Unfortunately, it's like many things. The simple fines are blamed for forest fires. While these are organized by the major buyers (including CP), I have heard that when people report fires that they are very seriously threatened by the
"Mafia". There was always burning. But before 2010 it was much less. But in recent years they have been burning whole mountains bare for the corn. But this year the corn is not worth harvesting. 3 baht per kilo. So there will be less burning. And it has nothing to do with the weather. Normally, half the mountain is on fire at this time in Chiangdao. But luckily nothing yet.

Clearly less smog here around Chiang Rai than in the same period last year.
