In Wang Thong (Phitsanulok) a 14-year-old girl died on Saturday afternoon and her friend was injured. The two were in the back of a pickup that skidded in the rain, collided with another car and then hit a concrete barrier.

The car was driven by the father of the 14-year-old victim. Police suspect he was speeding.

This accident shows once again how dangerous it is to transport people in a flatbed and why the government wants to ban this (with the exception of Songkran). It turns out to be a difficult discussion because many poor Thai people in rural areas depend on this type of transport and are therefore opposed to the measure.

It is not known when or if the ban will take effect.

This ban (more than 6 people) is still in place. Whether the police will also check this is another story.
They think not. There would be too much resistance.
The government will re-examine the whole thing.
We will come back to it later.

Thailand means: land of the free. They do not let themselves be held back by any form of rules or sense of responsibility. If you want to drive very fast when you feel like it (or have no idea that you are doing this) then you just do it even if this can result in the death of your own daughter (or other people) . Buddha apparently wanted it that way. Very sad this way of thinking, stricter legislation will unfortunately not change this in my opinion. Fortunately, not every Thai has this attitude, but there are quite a few who think this way (see the traffic accident statistics…..)

Every death in a traffic accident is one too many, but to pay attention to this as an extra shovel of coal on the fire is also exaggerated. In the same time there have been hundreds of deaths on the moterbikes due to drunk or young drivers. Think that there are more fatalities in the minibuses than passengers sitting on the back of a pick-UP. Of course you will be injured in an accident The fact that these pick-ups with so many people on the back are not allowed to drive on the Motorway with 150 is a good thing, but to also institute a general ban (including commuter traffic) is pretty far-fetched and certainly to attribute the high death toll to it

I recently touched on the “lacquer of rules” in the company of a few Thais.
I was assured that everything is “mai pen rai” except money matters.
It was immediately mentioned again that Thailand is proud to be a free country and has never been occupied by another country, an occupier who will immediately impose rules.
In Thailand, rules are flouted, they said. Just look: people drive without a helmet or against the traffic. Pays the fine after which the cap is tapped.
I was assured that there will never be a government that can take away the Thai's freedom.
The death of every human being is already known at birth, my wife says.
Of course, this also applies to the 14-year-old girl, she says.
    Very sad,

Remember the first car we bought in 1998, wife sweetly suggested the idea of going to the family in the Isaan (ban Paeng) a reasonable distance from Phuket where we lived at the time, anyway we set off, off the island via the Sarasin bridge to the 4 lane road near Surat thani, once on this road a predecessor was driving on the right, also had no intention of going to the left lane, when I said to my wife; can't this man go left? she replied; why can't you pass it on the left? so I've adapted since then and haven't had a problem since 1998, not wisdom but luck.

Your wife knows the tricks of the trade. It is mainly practical thinking.
People drive for a long time on the left as well as on the right lane. They overtake both left and right..
A very expensive car is rarely if ever stopped. If an agent makes the mistake of doing this anyway, he is guaranteed to be severely beaten.
An acquaintance of ours was once a colonel in the army..Breaked all the rules..Only knew him and was perplexed.
Resigned as a general, .. Still ignores all parking bans, overtakes where not allowed, etc.
Have to laugh at the Traffic Police.
Gives them a bottle of Scotch on New Year's Day, which he still has too much of.
