The newspaper speaks of an 'ordeal' (trial, torment) and that must have been for the construction worker who was freed from the collapsed apartment building in Khlong Luang (Pathum Thani) last night after 26 hours.

He is one of the seven construction workers who got trapped in the ruin [because that's all it is]. When he was carried to the ambulance on a stretcher, rescuers cheered.

And they don't have it easy. Last night, heavy rain hindered the rescue operation, which according to engineers is also proceeding with difficulty because construction drawings are missing.

In addition to the man with whom the message starts, two others were found yesterday. One of them has stated that seven persons are trapped in a hall under the collapsed building, but he did not know if they were still alive. At the time of going to press, this man had not yet been freed. He was injured in his feet.

The second man lay with his legs under a concrete pillar. Rescue workers managed to free him from that precarious position. The medical staff at the scene decided to amputate his legs, but the man died before he could be helped. This brings the number of (confirmed) deaths to three (yesterday the newspaper's website reported four).

The first two dead are a Cambodian mother and her 8-month-old child. They were found on Monday. The number of injured now stands at 24 (previously 19), nine of whom are Cambodians. The injured are being treated in four hospitals (previously two). One is a pregnant Thai worker with a broken hip. A Cambodian has a lung haemorrhage.

As is often the case with disasters, there are also stories of miraculous escapes. A 25-year-old Thai says something hit his head during his flight. Seconds later, the building collapsed, but by then he was already in a safe place. "I can't believe I managed to survive."

Nothing is known about the cause yet. The Engineering Institute of Thailand says the contractor and owner have not yet come forward. “When we have the project plan, the chances of helping survivors are good,” said EIT Director Suwatchawee Suwansawad.

The contractor is Plook Plan Co, owned by the son of the former Deputy Police Commissioner convicted of murder in a jewelry case. [Do you get the connection?]

    Hi Dick,

    That family connection????
    Perhaps a criminal streak?

An apartment building can't just collapse, can it, so that only the elevator shaft remains?
Or am I too stupid to understand that???
Do I have a twist in my brain that starts thinking that materials have been tampered with?

I think they have mixed wheat flour with plaster and yes, that doesn't hold any weight, at least not an apartment building.

That man, rescued after such a long time and yet legs amputated to die after all..
I think for the person a blessing.

But I shouldn't think about waiting longer than XNUMX hours for your rescue, in other words whether it will still come???

I hope that the construction company, after a thorough (!) investigation and found guilty, will be held 100% liable.

I wish the people there strength and luck in finding the last people who have collapsed.

    LOUISE

We live in Chon Buri and a contractor next to us started building 45 apartments in October. These should be ready in 10 months, but they are not yet halfway. When I see what a rare mess is being delivered, I am glad that (if they fall over) they are just far enough from our house. With the lifting, there were already several piles that spontaneously sank into the ground before the lifting block did anything, so they are a meter deeper than the (now floating) foundation. pouring the rest of the concrete with buckets, you see a day later that there are a dozen nests in it because they do have a vibrating needle, but they do not use it. The whole construction is a big fiasco.
I am not surprised that one has collapsed but I am surprised that so many are still standing !!
