Former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra appeared before the Supreme Court today. She had to answer for herself in the issue of rice subsidies, but pleads not guilty.

She repeated to the journalists present that she was innocent. She also hoped for a fair trial.

Shinawatra is facing charges of abuse of power and corruption in connection with the rice farm subsidy program. Her government allegedly bought rice from farmers for a price much higher than the market price. This cost the treasury about 3,5 billion euros.

The Thai parliament already decided in January to ban her from politics for the next five years. That was mainly a politically motivated decision, says Shinawatra.

Shinawatra was impeached by Thailand's Supreme Court in May 2014 after months of protests and unrest in Bangkok. The rest of the government was sent home in a military coup later that month. If Shinawatra is found guilty by the Supreme Court, she faces XNUMX years in prison.
