A number of people, including many tourists, have been injured or burnt by what should have been a New Year's wish. Many people panicked on Koh Phangan (Surat Thani) when a New Year's wish was lit.

However, it turned out to be of defective material. The burning "Happy New Year" letters caused a shower of sparks and smoke just after midnight. Much can be seen on social media. The wind was also wrong, so it was blown towards the audience.

When asked, Lt.Colonel Somsak Noorod of the Koh Phangan police gave the understatement that these were not fireworks, because they are forbidden. He also did not know what the “Happy New Year 2017” display could be called. It burned like a torch, but it wasn't fireworks. Like the other people, he was a victim of the shower of sparks, because the faulty construction did not function.

Haha, a nice piece of Thai logic: it's not fireworks, because fireworks are prohibited.

Yes Khun Peter, completely agree with you, Thai logic indeed. Such as the starting point of Thai authorities that prostitution does not occur in Thailand because it is not allowed by law. And this 'logic' simply avoids problems.

There seems to have even been a death.

Unfortunately, you sometimes have these kinds of things, but I don't like having to ban everything EU-like now. I think the chance of getting injured in Thai traffic is greater than at a party with fireworks, etc
