On the Thai Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangkok an illegal stockpile of ivory has been seized, the Telegraaf.

The stock was stored in a warehouse and came from Dubai with the aim of being forwarded to Laos. Customs officials tracked down the secret cargo after a type. They searched a warehouse at Suvarnabhumi airport and came across a whopping 239 elephant tusks. The catch has a street value of more than 2,5 million euros.

In December 2008, research organization TRAFFIC reported that it had Thailand and China had found 9000 pieces of ivory and 16 complete tusks. WWF and TRAFFIC have called on Burmese authorities to cooperate with the Thai and Chinese police in countering this illegal trade.

The international trade in ivory has been banned since 1989. In this way it was hoped to put an end to the barbaric slaughter of elephants. Experts estimate that about 38.000 African elephants are killed every year for their tusks. There is still a high demand for ivory, especially in Asia, Japan and China.
