This year, at least 400 rare marine animals have been killed by the use of banned fishing gear. These are sea turtles (57%), dolphins and whales (38%) and manatees (5%). Other causes of death include disease and water pollution, the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources said.

The cause of death of marine animals has been researched for three years. The dead fish make up less than 10 percent of the 5.000 marine life found in Thailand's waters. It is estimated that the number of dolphins and whales is 2.000, sea turtles 3.000 and manatees 250.

The Department of Marine and Coastal Resources tries to protect the vulnerable animals by establishing protected zones. Fishermen must also adhere to rules.

In some places there is cooperation between parties. On Phuket, the lights of hotels on Hat Mai Khao beach are turned off at night so as not to disturb the turtles that lay their eggs on the beach.
