Home » News from Thailand » From 2019 baggage checks of arriving passengers at Thai airports
The luggage of all arriving passengers at major Thai airports will be checked for drugs and contraband. The scanning equipment will be installed first at Suvarnabhumi and at a later stage at Don Mueang and the airports of Chiang Mai and Phuket.
The cabinet has earmarked an amount of 1 billion baht for this. The tender procedure will start in May.
To date, only suspicious baggage is screened.

An excellent idea, I can only applaud this.
But probably the amount of 1 billion baht will be paid by the tourist and not by the government.
There is already scanning equipment at the 2 exits. This usually includes a large number of customs or similar officials. Yet I rarely, if ever, see any activity that resembles control.
So that will be set up again in Eftelingrijen for this new attraction on Bangkok Suv. Hopefully they do it right and not a few sizes too small so that everything goes smoothly.
They have 555 humor there. That means everyone through the scanner, people and luggage. It's nice when you get off the plane. Then before immigration through gates etc. And so queues at 3 places: control, border guard and the baggage carousel. If you're unlucky, then also customs... We can't make it more fun. I wouldn't be surprised if this balloon is brought down again.
Indeed, three times in a row, as in many countries in the world. It doesn't get any more fun, but the alternative is staying home.
Obviously it's annoying, but if we had all adhered to the rules, these kinds of measures would not have been necessary
Presumably (hopefully) the luggage will be checked before it reaches the baggage carousel. This seems the most logical to me.
So I will no longer be able to take that 2nd bottle of Jenever in my suitcase with me. And what about those 12 bags of Senseo coffee pods? Smuggled goods?
and the frikadellen and croquettes that I occasionally take with me (I know it's not allowed officially but still)
During my working life I have lived and worked in about 30 countries. In all those countries you are sometimes checked upon arrival. I have been coming to Thailand since 1992, now living in Prachin Buri. In those 25 years my luggage has never been checked. That has always amazed me.
I have the impression that now that the army is in power (with a very capable leader) some finishing touches will be made. Rightly so.
In Bali, your luggage will also be scanned at customs upon arrival of an international flight, just throw the suitcase and the trolley on the belt of the X-ray, pick it up again on the other side of the machine and then go outside. This rarely takes longer than 1 minute.
