Bus fares in the capital are expected to increase by an average of 2 baht this year, which is an increase of 30 percent. BMTA president Nuttachat announced the increase yesterday, which is necessary because the Bangkok public transport company (BMTA) has a debt of 100 billion baht.

The bus ticket for the MRTA buses without air-conditioning now costs a minimum of 6 baht and 50 satang, which is less than a ticket on the buses operated by private companies. Those tickets start at 8 baht and 50 satang. In the air-conditioned buses (yellow-orange color), the price will probably go up from 11-23 baht to 13-25 baht.

According to a spokesman for the BMTA, the increase should solve the liquidity problem of the BMTA within three to five years. According to him, the rate increase can take effect when just under 500 new buses are taken into use, so that passengers also get more quality for their money.

Another measure to repay BMTA's debts is the redundancy of XNUMX ticket inspectors on the buses when people can travel with a public transport card.
