The Thai government has confirmed that construction of the 290 billion baht (8,82 billion US dollar) U-Tapao aviation complex will start early this year.

Government spokesman Tipanan Sirichana said in a statement that the project will create more than 15.000 additional jobs in the first five years and further boost growth in Thailand's aviation industry.

The investment plan has been set up to transform U-Tapao Airport into a new international airport with direct connections to Don Muang Airport and Thailand's main airport, Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Tipanan added that the public-private project in Thailand's industrial east will cover more than 1.000 hectares and is aimed at attracting more tourists.

The government's website shows that the ambitious project, known as "Eastern Aviation City", will also include a cargo transportation zone, an aviation training center, and aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul.

What does U-Tapao stand for, what is the meaning of the name and why was it chosen?

      Look up http://www.thai-language.com Alexander
      U-tapao :: อู่ตะเภา
      NL sound: oè:tàphau (long oe, L, L, M)
Meaning: อู่ = harbour, ตะเภา = Chinese junk
In other words: harbor for Chinese junks.
I assume that there used to be a harbor or mooring place (nearby) where (mainly) the Chinese junks moored.

Similar to the naming of Amsterdam Airport.

Maybe googling? come to know that this is Rayong-Pataya.
It's not normal to put down something like this on a 4-hour drive from Bangkok. Better improve the train infrastructure and switch to normal gauge instead of narrow gauge. Just put a rail next to it and it's fixed.

Much more interesting for goods and also for passenger traffic.

It is not a new airport, but an existing military airport to which civilian flights have been carried out for a few years.

In the past, Qatar flew from Doha, with a stopover at Phuket to U-Tapao. I don't think it was a success because of that stopover.

If there are direct flights to U-Tapao, I think many people would rather fly there than via Bangkok. Saves a few hours travel time, no toll roads and no traffic jams.

U/Tapao is an airfield built by the Americans during the Vietnam War
        attacks on Vietnam

easy to fly to Pattaya !
taxi 800 baht instead of 1200 baht (or with BOLT even cheaper but then you have to go outside the airport)

    distance
bangkok airport 01h45 to pattaya (147km)
    Utapao 40min to Pattaya (45km)

Fred, Thailand is a bit more than Pattaya, I hope?
I'm sure not just a piece of land has been designated, I assume that it was preceded by several studies.

It's been 'yesterday' June 19 according to link.

Fast train connection to and from………is a separate contract.
A lot of people will become mega rich from this project.
It seems clear to me that it will bring convenience to the tourists who are expected to have a ceiling of 80 million [news item].
With three international locations of this size, the rest of Southeast Asia has nothing but Thailand to listen to.
For the 'little man' who wants to make some money in the next ten years, buy some land in that region.

U-Tapao has been around for so long, American B52s left there during the Vietnam War for bombing raids on Laos, among others.
