The new Central Station in Bangkok, Bang Sue, is on track and is 71 percent advanced. The mega station of 264.000 square meters is to replace the old Hua Lamphong in 2021.

Yesterday Prime Minister Prayut went to take a look together with Minister Arkhom of Transporter and he was satisfied with the progress. Bang Sue will become the transport hub of the capital, linking the rail network to the rest of Asean.

The station will have three floors and a basement with 1.700 parking spaces. The ground floor is intended for travel information, ticket sales and there will also be a commercial area with shops.

The first floor has four platforms for the Red Line (metro) and short-distance trains, in addition there are eight platforms for long-distance trains. The second floor has ten platforms for regional train services plus two platforms for high-speed trains and the HSL airport. A pedestrian bridge takes you to the Blue Line (metro).

The Red Line, Bang Sue – Rangsit, Bang Sue – Taling Chan, will become operational when the station opens. The two trains used for test runs will arrive in June.

The old Hua Lamphong station, which opened in 1916, may become a railway museum.

I don't understand why people call this station in the north of the city “Central Station”. Why not “North Station” or “Main Station North”? “Central Station” gives me the impression that this station is located in the middle of the city. I can imagine that similar stations could be built in the east and south of Bangkok in the future…

Perhaps you shouldn't read "Central" as "in the middle", but as "the most important".

“A central station is usually the main railway station of a city. Often different railway lines end up there, so that travelers from or to different directions can get on, off or change trains.”

    Well Daniel,

You cannot speak of a center in Bangkok, such as Dam Square in Amsterdam, because every district has its own center and coincidence or not, there are 50 districts. For tourists that is Siam, but for others it is Lad Phro, Lak-Si or Ding Dong.

The distance as the crow flies, from Bang Su central station to Rangsit, one side of Bangkok is 22 kilometers and to Suvarnabhumi airport, the other side of Bangkok, is 26 kilometers, so quite central.

It's a pity that Hua Lampong is disappearing as an operational station…
