The US government has announced in a statement that they will support the new government of Thailand.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said his country looks forward to deepening relations between allies as a new cabinet is formed in Bangkok: “Our alliance will grow even stronger as we work together to achieve common goals such as to develop security, peace and well-being in the Indopacific and beyond.”

“We support transparency and good governance around the world and will continue to work with the Thai people and government,” Pompeo said.

Remarkable is the fact that in the statement Prayuth Chan-o-chan is not congratulated or even mentioned. After parliamentary elections at the end of March, Prayut returned to power as Prime Minister.

I'm afraid it's a little mustard after meals. Under President Obama the relationship had cooled, because it was US policy not to provide (military) support to regimes that had not come to power democratically (and Prayut ousted the democratically elected Yingluck, whatever you of her and her brother).

Since then, Thailand has made significant military purchases, but not from the US. Trump will find the latter annoying, but the Thais have already moved on; armored vehicles from Ukraine, fighter jets from Sweden and other military equipment from China. A lot of business with China anyway, also in terms of infrastructure.

"Dealmaker" Trump is of course happy with it, but I think that the Thais are not necessarily waiting for the US, although the various army units would of course like to have some nice American toys (whether it is necessary is of course point 1,2, 3 and XNUMX…)

America sees that it has lost its position of power in Southeast Asia to China.
They got there a little late.
They probably want to use Thailand as an army base again.
Whether she will succeed is doubtful.

In my opinion, Trump sees too much contact/relationship/trade between China and Thailand.
Of course he doesn't like that, so the cry comes to Thailand, ""I want to be your boyfriend""
Proclaiming outwardly that he has, among other things, North Korea under his thumb and that he has made a “clear deal” with Kim.
Well, Kim just does what he likes and if he can use Trump for something he will not fail to do so.
Trump doesn't have the tenth brain in rottenness that Kim has.
    The same goes for Putin.

My goodness, what a delusion of pride that guy has.

LOUISE you can always give your opinion, but it is not true that every government leader or more or less famous people have a lot of things in their head, but I wonder if you are apparently not allowed to label someone, what does that guy have? delusions of pride come from someone who is (not) well educated, it seems strange to say something like that.

        Dear nl.th,

Gosh, a completely new blogger or something, because I can't remember this name.
Or an old one, which is behind a different name for a while.

1-Couldn't it occur to you that there are Dutch people who read a lot of news in foreign newspapers, apart from the Telegraaf???
2-Couldn't it also be that we have contacts with Americans and hear more things from them than from the newspapers???

So who is wrong here to label someone as ill-educated?
I don't pretend to know everything, but something more than people who don't do/have 1 and 2.

I think America has other motives. China is slowly taking over everything. They have already bought up a lot in Cambodia, Laos and Thailand. And Thailand also leaves many projects to China.
America has missed the boat and is now trying to go ashore in Thailand again. Zals Dennis already remarked “a little mustard after the meal”.

Aftertalk. Name me 1 realized project of any size from China in Thailand. There is only 1 major project involving China and that the high-speed line Bangkok-Nong Khai, which was initiated by Mrs. Yingluck. At the time of the military regime, 2014-2019, no agreement could be reached on terms of funding, technical details and more. Talking for 5 years and still not breaking anything. So don't say that China and Thailand are good buddies. There is only 1 big investor and that is Japan, year after year for decades.

“The military of the United States is deployed in more than 150 countries around the world, with over 165,000 of its active-duty personnel serving outside the United States and its territories.”
China has three military bases outside its borders.
Here is the geopolitical strategy of both superpowers and the big difference. Add to that Trump's policy of making the countries where the US military is present pay more for their own defense and forcing the countries to buy more American products, and it is not so difficult to understand that the strategy of the Chinese has many countries more appealing than the Americans.
The Americans defend their interests with arms and trade wars, the Chinese with economic and financial interests in business (particularly agriculture, tourism and transport) and in public infrastructure (railways and ports) of the foreign countries concerned.
