81 taxi and tuk-tuk drivers were arrested yesterday at the Grand Palace in Bangkok. This concerns refusing passengers, not wanting to turn on the taximeter, etc. There have been many complaints recently from both Thai and foreign tourists.

The police have promised to take tougher action in the area around the Grand Palace. A total of 81 taxi drivers were arrested during the operation. Of these, 55 were found to have broken the law, 25 refused to carry passengers and one driver did not have a taximeter in his vehicle.

In the past year, a total of 12.585 taxi drivers were caught breaking the law. At least 3.810 taxi drivers refused to transport passengers, 3.435 did not use the taximeter and 1.759 for ignoring a parking ban.

I often had a taxi driver in BKK who wouldn't turn on the meter, said he didn't know where I wanted to go, suddenly had no time left, etc, etc.
You can of course get out and try another taxi, but sometimes it does the same thing.
The last time at SIAM Square even 5 times in a row!
I want to force things by staying put, but my wife gets very nervous and gets out.
Is there a hotline you can call where someone speaks English?
If so, is action being taken against those drivers?

I recently wanted to take a taxi from Sukhumvit soi 4 to Hua Lampong. I had planned to pay a maximum of 200 Baht for the ride.
So I step on the sidewalk in front of my hotel and a Tuktuk comes. I want to go to Hua Lampong and he says 200 Baht. I think fine no whining and get in.
And then he started. Where are you going? So to Hua Lampong. But he insist. And I kept saying Hua Lampong. Finally he said okay, but had to make a stop somewhere first.
That was my cue to get out. And said, bye, I'll take the subway.

    So whinge. Shame.
