News from Thailand – Friday, March 27, 2015

The Nation opens today with an article about the repatriated fishermen Indonesia who were victims of forced labour. The fact that there are still serious abuses in the fishing industry is damaging to Thailand's image and may also have economic consequences: http://goo.gl/f7mbTH

Bangkok Post opens on Friday with the article that Prayut Chan-o-cha has vowed to take legal action against private fishing companies that break the law by using slave labor. A series of measures are on the way, such as heavy penalties for human traffickers, more and improved inspections and good protection of witnesses. These measures are laid down in a law by parliament. With this, Thailand wants to show Europe and the United States that the country will take firm action against human trafficking. An important signal for Thailand because otherwise a boycott could be imposed on fish and fish products from Thailand: http://goo.gl/qrB2MM

– Aviation in Thailand is under fire because Japan and South Korea have not given permission for the expansion of air traffic from Thailand. It is therefore not possible to operate new charter and scheduled flights from Thailand. Japan and South Korea are not convinced that Thai airlines and aircraft meet standard international safety requirements. Because the countries mentioned are obstructive, NokScoot has to cancel flights. This probably also applies to Thai AirAsia. The smaller Thai charter companies are also the victims. The existing charter and scheduled flights to Japan and South Korea are allowed to continue. The situation is worrying because other countries such as the US, China and Europe could also adopt the measures: http://goo.gl/KOFXaL

– Fruit and vegetables in Thailand often contain too many pesticides. These substances are bad for human and animal health and can contribute to the development of cancer and other serious diseases. In a survey by the Chulabhorn Research Institute, Kaprao (Holy basil) is in poor condition, exceeding the Ministry of Health's safety limit in 62,5 percent. The products examined came from various supermarkets such as Tesco Lotus, Big C, and Makro. Even the products with the special 'Q label' had too many toxins. It was also wrong with other vegetables, including eggplant, cucumbers and chili peppers: http://goo.gl/b0EHCy

– A train in Ayutthaya ignored a stop sign and therefore collided with a stationary train last night. At least 17 people were injured, including two foreign tourists: http://goo.gl/lv6BoI

Pesticides. It is already known that in Thailand they don't take things that well.
If you always eat out, you just take that risk. Prepare your food yourself, you can take that into account. Macro nice and cheap. Meat products sometimes have such a red color that the prohibited substance that makes this possible is already prohibited in our country. Furthermore, the meat comes from the freezer and becomes just as easy
defrosted several times. I only buy at foodland. I buy certain items at Makro. One thing I do know. The pesticides are often in the skin of a product.
I always do cucumber with a peeler. Won't save my life either.
