News from Thailand – January 27, 2015

The Nation opens with the message that the 56 state-owned companies in Thailand, such as the railways and the national airline THAI Airways, are going to be reformed. This is also badly needed because large losses are incurred: http://goo.gl/0EmDBo

– In The Nation further attention to the harsh statements of the United States towards the new rulers in Thailand. For example, US Deputy Secretary of State Daniel Russell called Yingluck's impeachment "politically motivated." Russell spoke these words at a seminar at Chulalongkorn University on US policy in Asia. The US is concerned about the political situation in Thailand. There is no democracy anymore, there are doubts about due process and freedom of expression is trampled underfoot. The deputy minister spoke with former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and former opposition leader Abhisit, among others: http://goo.gl/m1zKoz

– On Phuket, a man (the nationality is not mentioned) will still stand trial for the attempted rape of an Australian tourist: http://t.co/qOxgUQ0ojZ

– In Bangkok Post there is an article about a serious accident Monday night in Nakhon Si Thammarat. Five people were killed after they fell from the back of a pick-up truck and were run over by an 18-wheel truck. There were a total of 11 people in the truck, of which, in addition to the five dead, three were hospitalized in a critical condition. The driver of the pick-up truck overturned the steering wheel on a U-turn because he wanted to avoid an accident. The passengers in the cargo bed then flew out of the car: http://t.co/4YmsgTsPxr

– The Thai police think they have arrested the serial rapist who has been active for years in Nakhon Pathom and Samut Songkhram and mainly targets older women. The results of the DNA test are first awaited: http://t.co/aAoZagWPT0

– The government of Myanmar has asked the Thai government to investigate the recent murder of three guest workers from Myanmar in a rubber plantation in Surat Thani: http://t.co/xg0QGHAepn

– A 27-year-old British tourist has been missing since December 22. Lauren Hebden last had contact with the outside world on the island of Koh Tao. That fact is remarkable because Koh Tao has often been in the news lately due to tourist deaths: http://goo.gl/zECCiZ

Christina Annesley, 23, from London, who was found dead on Koh Tao last Wednesday, did not die from a crime. No evidence of this was found in the autopsy. The young woman was taking medication for a chronic illness. It is being investigated whether these are the cause of her death: http://goo.gl/KvlJzN

It's a laugh – if it weren't so sad: the US concerns about the lack of democracy, the doubts about due process and freedom of expression in Thailand. 'Hypocrite' is putting it mildly, considering the attitude of the US – and also many other countries with 'Western values' – towards a brutal dictatorship with inhuman rules and punishments such as Saudi Arabia.

Waar bemoeien zich die Amerikanen mee en precies een gesprek met de foute mensen.en dan nog een conclusie trekken.

America, a country that wants to play policeman in the world. Please sweep your own street clean first.

If an American finally says something sensible and true, he will be ridiculed here.
    To speak of hypocrisy!

There is no democracy anymore, there are doubts about due process and freedom of expression is trampled underfoot.
Expelling Yingluck from future politics is politically silencing the opponent.
    There is no free speech.
The junta is not elected by the people whatever name they give, emergency parliament appointed etc.

That someone (or country) has butter on his head does not mean that his opinion is unjustified in this matter.

In my response above they are not 'derided' because the American opinion on the situation in Thailand would not make sense (because it certainly does, in my opinion), but because the weight of that opinion is rather hampered by the use of other standards for certain other countries.

Dear GJKlaus, it's not about the American saying something sensible, it's about whether he has the right to speak. In America there is only a sham democracy, journalists who tell the real truth mysteriously die and the legal process is highly debatable. The behavior of CIA, FBI, NSA under the direction of the financial world in particular, means that the Americans are the last to criticize Thailand.
