News from Thailand – Wednesday, March 25, 2015

The Nation opens with the report that the Thai government denies Amnesty International's allegations of torture of the suspects in the bombings. The government has set itself the goal of better informing foreign news agencies and human rights organizations in order to create understanding for government actions: http://goo.gl/kxbfYR

Bangkok Post opens today with the Thai government's attack on human trafficking. Although the intentions are good, the practice is unruly because previous governments have also failed to eradicate human trafficking. Prayut now has the chance. There will therefore be a series of measures in which the services involved must work together better. Thailand has every interest in tackling human trafficking as otherwise the country will be placed on an international blacklist and could potentially be affected by a trade boycott: http://goo.gl/aA0zvu

– Heavy rainfall flooded a number of streets in Bangkok yesterday. The result is a lot of nuisance for pedestrians and traffic. In some streets the water reached knee height. A tropical storm is the cause of the stormy weather.

Seven people were killed and two injured in a collision between a train and a pick-up in Chiang Mai. The pick-up crossed an unguarded level crossing, but due to the bad weather (heavy rain), the driver apparently did not see the train coming: http://goo.gl/PEDxmO

– Thai tour operators are not happy with the long holidays in Thailand. According to the industry, many Thais therefore go abroad instead of staying in their own country. “More and more Thais are opting for a holiday trip to Japan and spending money there, which is not good for our economy,” complains Suparek Soorangura, president of the Thai Travel Agents Association: http://goo.gl/LvJYe

– Three Chinese tourists were killed in a bus accident on Kata Hill. A tour bus with 20 tourists went off the road and the victims were thrown from the bus and 15 were also injured: http://goo.gl/40CNvb

  1. l.low size says up

Pattaya and Jomtien have also suffered greatly from the enormous
water quantity. On the Suhkumvit Rd. past Thepprasit Rd. towards Sattahip
the water was at least half a meter high in some parts.
A hurried but stupid bus driver created a 2 meter water fountain
high over the other road users, who were almost standing still.

I am very curious how many Thai people actually go on holiday and then
abroad?! In my environment I hardly notice it. Young children scurry
around and the older children sometimes work / help.

    Sincerely,
    Lodewijk

      “hasty but stupid bus driver”

That's commonplace in Thailand, right? 🙂
