20 villages in Trang flooded

The weather gods work rather selectively in the South. While less rain falls elsewhere in the region, twenty villages in Trang have been flooded.

The worst hit was the village of Moo 7 where the water reached a height of more than one meter. From the army camp of Phraya Ratsadanupradit, soldiers went to the village in boats to offer help. Another affected village was Lam Phula. There, hundreds of families were confronted with water from the Ban That mountains and water from the neighboring Thong Song district of Nakhon Si Thammarat. In the district (Huai Yot), an aid center was set up that is open 24 hours a day.

Trang is one of the southern provinces to experience flooding after a vicious low-pressure area swept across the region from Saturday.

Nakhon Si Thammarat

In Nakhon Si Thammarat province, five districts have been declared disaster areas, making them eligible for immediate aid. An initial assessment shows that the rainfall in those districts affected more than 12.000 villagers, damaged 2.000 rai of farmland and six roads, said Chetsada Watthananurak, head of the provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department.

The governor of the province says the rain has stopped and the flooding is easing. But the authorities remain alert and they will continue to help the affected residents, he promises.

Other provinces

Besides Trang and Nakhon Si Thammarat, other provinces were also affected by heavy rains and flooding: Chumphon, Surat Thani, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Ranong, Phangnga, Phuket and Krabi.

Pattani

In Pattani, the navy resumed its search for four missing crew members of a fishing boat that capsized 40 kilometers off the coast on Saturday.

Phatthalung

Rainfall has decreased in Phatthalung province. The authorities and volunteers are making every effort to drain the water. The situation is expected to return to normal within one or two days. However, concerns remain about the amount of flood water in Lan Saka district. Twenty pumps have been installed at seventeen locations to pump the water into the sea.

Krabi

There are five hundred in the province of Krabi long tail boats anchored off Koh Phi Phi beach. The skippers were advised on Sunday that they had better not sail because heavy rain showers and storm winds were expected. The boats transport tourists to the mainland.
