The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belgium is launching a new passport with the design theme of our cartoon characters.

On 27 January 2022, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès presented the newly designed Belgian passport. The new version is even more secure thanks to new security and personalization techniques. The new Belgian passport will also be immediately recognizable thanks to an original design, a tribute to our cartoon characters.

Why a new Belgian passport?

The passport is a very important travel document. Therefore, the product must be as safe as possible and of the highest quality. Thanks to new security and personalization techniques, the security of the Belgian passport has been improved. It was developed in close collaboration with anti-fraud specialists from the federal police and will be produced by the consortium of companies Zetes and Thales.

The price charged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs remains unchanged: 65 euros (for adults) and 35 euros (for minors). This is the price for an ordinary 34-page passport applied for according to the standard procedure, excluding municipal taxes, which each municipality is free to determine. The period of validity is always 7 years for adults and 5 years for minors. The various delivery options remain the same as before: standard procedure (5 working days), urgent procedure (next working day, at extra cost), super rush procedure: in 4h30, at extra cost.

The new passport is available February 7 2022 be requested from your municipality in Belgium or from the consular post competent for your permanent place of residence abroad, insofar as you live abroad and are registered with the Belgian consular post. The old passport will also remain valid after February 7 until the validity date stated on it.

With the current Belgian passport, our citizens can travel to 149 countries, 110 of which without a visa (Source: https://www.passportindex.org/passport/belgium/).

A brand new design

The FPS Foreign Affairs is pleased with the excellent cooperation with the publishers and rights holders, who have agreed to use their famous cartoon characters to illustrate the new Belgian passport: Bonte Magazine, IMPS/LAFIG, Mediatoon, Moulinsart NV, Standaard Uitgeverij.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Sophie Wilmès: “The Belgian passport is among the best in the world, which makes us proud, but also attracts the attention of counterfeiters. That is why we continue to work on a continuous improvement of safety. The introduction of this new passport also gives us the opportunity to highlight our 9th art form, the comic strip, which is a central element of our culture and image abroad. I thank the publishers, authors and rights holders who have kindly cooperated. Finally, and in my opinion not unimportant: although the quality and security of the passport have been improved, the price charged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will not increase. In a context of rising prices, this is a powerful gesture that saves our citizens' wallets.”

Exhibition

On the occasion of the launch of the new passport, a temporary exhibition on the history of the Belgian passport will run at the Comic Strip Museum (Zandstraat 20, 1000 Brussels) from 28 January to 6 March 2022.

Wondering how long they have been meeting whether it should be Lambic, Tintin or Jommeke or can we choose that.

    Really?
I already see it with immigration. You look like Lambik. And everyone there folds in half.

What are we going to experience in Belgium…

Yes Dutch, let you go... We deserve it with such politicians

The new passport is a gem. Ingeniously secured, but so attractive that many non-Belgians would like to steal one.

    Dear,
Instead of being concerned with this, Belgium would be concerned with complying with European legislation.
A passport is valid for 10 years throughout Europe.
    In Belgium only 7 years.
    Greetings.
    Gino.

      Indeed.
7 years was actually a transitional phase to 10 years, but you don't hear anything about that anymore.

The old Dutch passport had a recognition mark on page 14, a dot to recognize forgery page 14 was related to Johan Cruijff
